Hi all,
I'm planning a visit to a friend who lives in Sheffield in July and in an unguarded moment I may have suggested a visit to a mine or two. The trouble is neither of us are exactly young so hanging from a rope isn't an option.
So are there any metal mine sites with say 30 miles of Sheffield that are fairly easy to get to and offer walk in access?
I hope you can help. Otherwise I shall look a right plonker ! 😢

There's plenty of Peak District lead mines within 45 minutes drive of Sheffield that don't need string to access - Mouldridge and Devonshire are the two that immediately spring to mind, there are several fairly easy ones in the Via Gellia as well as some more challenging ones. Just give me some idea of how long/strenuous a trip you'd like and I can give you recommendations accordingly.

Thanks AR. What I'm looking for is something easy and relatively short. A sort of 'taster' if you see what I mean.

Mouldridge is probably your best bet - you can park fairly near and the whole system is do-able in a couple of hours. Alternatively, if you want to combine a trip with indulging iin the fleshpots of Matlock bath, go for Devonshire....

Hi, I now live in South Africa but spent my youth in Derbyshire and lived in Sheffield. Has already been said, there are many Lead mines within 30 miles of Sheffield in the Peak district. As an old retired Caver I am in a similar boat.
You could always go to Casleton and go down the Speedwell Mine. It is a "show cave/mine" and you will have to pay the required fee, but it will get you underground safe and clean and you will get an underground boat trip thrown in as well.
