Just grabbed this from an antiques store near to me.

It's old Yorkshire Miners hat. haven't done any research into it so far, so no idea on age and even where or who made it!

Any ideas?

Looks like the old compressed paper hat that were in use in the '40's & 50's, though they had a peak. My first caving helmet was one of these, they didn't take too kindly to being stored wet, you had to re-shape it and dry it out before using it again!

And then he used to put an oldham lamp on the front and do his best R2D2 impersonation.

Looks very similar to the compressed paper helmets used in the Cleveland ironstone mines in the 1950s. They were made by Huwood of Gateshead and the big rectangular chunk supporting the caplamp holder contained a plastic visor which could be pulled down to protect the eyes.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Very unusual...I have a few of these but never seen anything like this one. With that "peak" to the rear, wondering if it had a specialist use...rescue or underground firefighter? etc?

Yes, MD,C? in a crown, a bit like the old "flameproof" crown on safety lamp glasses. There's the word PATENT underneath & also a word I can't make out, around the bottom of the crown...

Spent many a happy hour working with one of the compressed paper helmets on...OK when just moistened by sweat, but when I moved to a face in the "Flockton" seam, not good. You had to remember to chuck your boots in the locker first, followed by the helmet. If you did it the other way around the first half-hour of the next shift, was very uncomfortable :glare:

I think a lot of folk started their mine sniffing/poking exploits with the compressed fibre helmet - the trusty "Mushy". Only marginally stronger under compressive load than a soggy Weetabix! Mine still lurks in the loft. Much to others amusement, I kept mine slathered in black boot polish and bulled up big time. Result - it never absorbed moisture and it remained rock hard ...er..well... pretty robust!

A "Mushy" , an Oldham Wheat and a snap tin full of Mars Bars. Happy days !!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you for all of your replies.

Only other thing to note, is that the helmet is of a small size. I have a small head, and it doesn't fit me at all. it's more than likely for a teenager.

Unfortunately, some of the writing is cut off at the bottom, all i can make out is

"Bathcat...... Forced"

Christwigg has obviously got better software than me! ๐Ÿ™‚ it certainly looks like "Bathgate_ _ _ (F)orged", it also looks like a peak has been cut off, probably to accomodate a visor.
Maybe we should be looking at the "M D C" part of it as a manufacturers trademark, it does say "Patent" afterall!
