Awesome.

Now you've got to figure out where you're going to set your alarm point.

What sort of figures do you think you'll bump into. ie:- what sorts of mines are you in?

I'm paying particular attention to the barometric pressure for
borderline mines.

There are a couple of holes that I've got lined up for a test or two.

Hi,
Gas sensors are the gas detectors that measure the concentration of the targeted gas by oxidizing or reducing the target gas at an electrode and measuring the resulting current. Gas sensors are the ideal product for residential and commercial buildings that require continuous monitoring for various gas leaks. http://www.murcogasdetection.com/mgs/

Thanks for the info rosemary1 but unless your monitors are portable and IP rated there no use to use as mine explores.

It's been a good few months since I posted the original question in this thread and I'm a bit closer to buying a sensor.

Was just wondering if anybody had any more feedback on any additional models.

The QRAE II 4 gas sensor mentioned by Stuey and Heb seems to be coming out on top at the moment http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gas-Detector-QRAE-II-4-gas-LEL-Oxy-CO-H2S-NEW-/180437040111?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item2a02e2bbef  for £325 delivered. Is this a reasonable price for it?

Can anybody give any advice on how big it is? Durability and dunkability?

And regularity and cost of calibration?

I've had mine about 8 months now, I'm now getting a message on start up that the six month calibration is due - but it still runs ok.

When I'm fully recovered from my knee ops, i'll send it in for calibration.

So far, it's been a pretty handy bit of kit, it's had a few knocks & splashes, but still going strong!

Cheers Simon - wrecked both of them within the space of 3 months, not been a very good year, 😞 spent most of it polishing my clay pipes & cataloguing my mineral collection. 😉

I'm right confused with this gas sensor malarkey now :(

On eBay we have http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gas-Detector-QRAE-II-4-gas-LEL-Oxy-CO-H2S-NEW-/180437040111?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Test_Measurement_Equipment_ET&hash=item2a02e2bbef  at £325 delivered.

Googling the thing within UK sites - and ignoring the fact that the 3rd hit is this thread! - it comes up with a number of companies that sell it. Almost none that give a price apart from http://www.ribble-enviro.co.uk/product/qrae-ii.htm  which lists it as a base price of £287+VAT and then you add options:

LEL & / Oxygen(+ £84.00 per unit)

LEL % / Oxygen / Carbon Monoxide(+ £126.00 per unit)

LEL % / Oxygen / Hydrogen Sulphide(+ £126.00 per unit)

LEL % / Oxygen / Hydrogen Sulphide / Carbon Monoxide(+ £168.00 per unit)

So for a 4 gas sensor it's (287+168)+VAT or £534.63 😮

To further confuse this is the same company as has it on eBay for £325 with delivery :stupid:

I'll ask them, but anybody got any ideas about this 'options' business of chooosing gas(es) the thing will monitor?

Pretty much standard Simon. No point paying for sensors that you don't need. Remember, most people don't buy these for exploring old mines! They therefore most likely know which gases they need warning about.

Thanks Rikj. They've just come back to me and said the £325 price includes all four sensors 🙂

I do not know who manufactures the sensors in the QRae instrument but generally there are available seperate CO and H2S sensors and also a combined CO/H2S sensor. Thus giving a four or five gas detection unit combining these with O2 and flammable or carbon dioxide (IR) and maybe another toxic sensor. The costs for the sensors do seem a little bit higher than normal though

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
