Its so sad to see the works torn down so fast. :(
14 months ago (before being made redundant) i worked in the machine shop and the old part of the works.

Here's a photo with a few machines still inside

iclok im backing you, very much so!!!!! been out with the wife up ripley tonight,on way home made her stop on butterley hill, its not done me any favours though, its upsetting me,literally,to what is happening to the works.since seeing the photos of the old shed, which unfortunately i didnt get to see,of such like the MAGNIFICENT spiral staircase, its just hitting even harder that we,and hopefully more people will,do our best to save it.there is too much of our great heritage going too fast, and we have to stop it,and,at least, save some for further generations.i showed the film i took yest to my 4 yr old daughter, and even she didnt like the destruction of the buildings.ive also been out with my sisters tonight, one of whom, and her husband work at the police headquarters at butterley, and they thought it was extremely sad what was going off.this is starting to mean too much to me to let it slip by,a campaign must be started to make local people realise what is happening, because i dont think they do and if more local people knew,i think they would care and at least the oldest parts would be saved.i really hope english heritage listen, and hopeully step in before it is too late.

A few years ago now, while I was researching certain photographic techinques, I came across this image of the Falkirk Wheel. http://www.gentles.info/KAP/Gallery/Pano2005/Falkirk_Wheel.htm
It was as a result of seeing this 360 degree spin that I decided to take up KAP. James Gentles who took the image is a fine exponent of KAP and produces what I call "bits of electronic wire" to help others do the same. Some of these bits of wire would also help in taking remote images underground if need be.

Can I please please ask in that case that everyone reading this thread, particularly locals sends a letter voicing their concerns to 'Ian' at my Business Email and 'sign it' with their own real name ... this gives me back up correspondence.... it should not attack those we seek to help us... just put a strongly worded email together saying why you think it should be saved, what it means to you and the locals, tater your example with your kids was perfect...

Iclok - sorry for not replying but since receiving your email I've had a very busy weekend with family visiting. Will hopefully reply this evening, if not, very first thing in the morning.

Has the article that Derby Evening Telegraph promised to print been published yet? If so, what date was it printed. My sister, who is almost blind has the Telegraph and has promised to get it sent to me, but she has great difficulty in seeing what article is what, if she had a specific date it would help.

Can I also add my plea to your request, "PLEASE ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY IN ANY FORM AND WHO IS PREPARED TO HELP BY SUPPORTING THIS CAMPAIGN IN TRYING TO SAVE THE REALLY IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE SITE (I shudder to think of that spiral staircase going for scrap!), PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL TO ICLOK AS HE HAS REQUESTED".

p.s. Later I'm going out for lunch to son No. 1's home. En route to his home, and looking eastwards to Portsmouth across the estuary of the River Meon at Tichfield Haven, Hampshire, the SPINNAKER TOWER can clearly be seen soaring above Portsmouth and the rest of the area. If one stands on the top of Portsdown Hill looking south down to Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, the Spinnaker Tower sticks out from the rest of the area - in years to come it will probably be the Butterley Engineering Company's final monument. TRAGIC.

Iclok - Just remembered, search for the Government website for the Act of Parliament that might help.

The Act is "The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act, 1990". I know that Section 54 of this Act covers the arguement for Derby City Council (the owners) giving a much needed lick of paint and repair to the "Friar Gate Railway Bridge", Derby - which has previously been mentioned on AN. Yet another beautiful piece of workmanship cast and made by Andrew Handyside's foundry in Derby in the late 1860's, now decaying and desperately needing some tender love and attention!!! :curse: :curse: :curse:

hello all.just got back from a family walk where the last bit took in a detour past the works.i had a walk round to the site entrance side to take more pics, and i was quite angry what i saw.two gypo looking blokes emerged from the far shop with an old bin with what looked like bits of metal in it.maybe they were trying nick copper cabling or something, but its not good seeing that.just hope they dont get into the old part and ruin the spiral staircase and other bits,to be honest i dont think they could do any more damage to the other shops though.hopefully they were just chancers after copper, not artefacts.im quite suprised that cawarden havent got bloke on site all the time, there must be over ยฃ1m worth of plant that could get vandalised, nevermind the buildings.im in abit of a pickle as to who to notify about my concerns, the police? cawarden???

I would suggest both, starting with the police.

I and many others on this site would be more than willing to do this. But it might be better if someone with good English could write a letter with the correct grammer.
Then we could copy and paste it with our names and signatures etc.

tater24 .... just left you a voice mail with my home phone... can you ring me urgently as I ended calling Cawarden out this afto... they had opened the door onto Butterley smashing off padlock and get this the pad lock into the Live Ripley Substation!!! I stopped ...went in and there was a nice big bag of copper wire... got the police and Cawarden in... think they got a suspect... but thats another story...

Call me please...

Oh when police arrived, the site had two photographers just walking around helping themselves on what is now quite a dangerous site, they had got in at the top through a fence... Cawardens view .. Likely no more photographers (except me and a couple of regulars) .... nicely done! ๐Ÿ˜

Although sending nn identically worded letters can be counterproductive I would have thought? Better each one written separately?

Yes I must admit any letter however badly worded etc or post on this site will be fine... remember the buildings at the mo are secure... its the long term view we are taking... All views welcomed...

Just given the police my statement... re todays fun and games ::)

It would appear one lot raided the old works, nicked the cable then came back to the site and dumped the waste outside the site gates ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Thanks and regards to all for your support...

Regards ICLOK

I've just been having a quick nosey on Amber Valley's website for planning apps around the site and it seems the've previously refused plans primarily because they were concerned about loss of some of the buildings and features - have a look at the decision notice here: http://www.ambervalley.gov.uk/plandocs/AVA/2008/0536/Decision%20Notice/Tcp%203_647050.pdf  This came from planning app no. AVA/2008/0536, its related listed building consent was AVA/2008/0535.

I couldn't find any more recent applications or details of an appeal on the planning portal website, so I'm a bit surprised demolition has started on site as the relevant permissions for a site containing listed buildings don't seem to be in place....

Follow the horses, Johnny my laddie, follow the horses canny lad-oh!

Just spoken to English Heritage who have basically not heard from Amber Valley since 2008..... they have asked for a formal letter approach as I have already stated I would do, two applications have been submitted and rejected as you rightly say by AVBC... I think our timing is just right as EH are now intending to speak to Amber Valley as unaware demolition process had started, I think we need to push EH hard now....

i believe the stationry power group at the midland railway centre have been using ex st pancras butterley co materials for their new engine house . wonder if the spiral staircase could find a home there ?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
