Can somebody explain to me what is the difference between the Oldham t1, t2, t3, t4 and t5.

Could you tell me what, if there is, the difference of each of them?

Do they look the same,

Should be on the web somewhere but early types had unspillable ink well type vents, later ones had valve breathers in the top under the lid.
The T2 was in my opinion the best they made, it had heavy duty cells and was slightly heavier but they would last for years and years and burn brighter due to a lower voltage drop under load.

I think the differences are very slight variations in design.

The last lead acid was the T6, I think made in South Africa. 24 hours light when new, 16 after 6 months, 12 after 12, then fall to about 8.

I still use a T at work.

Latterly they started branding the various T cells as "megalight".

Don't forget the wonderful MF cell which I believe was also a lead acid.

The T had the fillers / vents in the body whilst the T3 had the sealed fillers in the top. Of all the Oldham's I've owned the best was a T3 which survived eight or nine years sustained abuse.

Apart from bog standard black they I seem to recall that they also produced cells in green and blue plastic - whether these had a different designation I don't know.

Fantastic lamps in their day, I always preferred them to the FX2 and FX3 which were the must have lamps of the time.

still have 2 T2s and use them all the time one is about 12 years old the other about 9 both keep a good charge and will last for about 12 hours !

I bought one of the blue plastic ones from caving supplies a good few years ago, it had the vents in the back. I think its still in the garage somewhere. It didn't seem to last very long before its life started to shorten.

I just recieved 5 defunct batteries from Caving Suplies, can you help me to identify which one is which, two of them have fents underneath the top, in the front and the other three have no spill holes but can be filled from the top.

To the best of my knowledge, having worked on quite a few of these for mining training, some quite old ones as well (which ended up at Rosevale Mine, perhaps they are still going!)
the T1, T2 and T3 were marked as such on the front of the casing, they had two filler holes 2/3rds of the way up the casing on the front and were see-through blueish coloured plastic.
The T4 was black casing, not see-through without a strong light behind! They had I think it was 2 white plastic plugs in top, under the stainless lid and no vents in the body. I am uncertain as to wether 'T4' was marked on the casing itself, dont seem to remember seeing it.
T5 and T6 had the same arrangement with the filling plugs but were marketed as 'maintainance free' and marked with MF. Note that Oldham started offering the blue plastic MF cells at this point too, the performance of these mostly fell off a cliff after the first 6 months!
The T6 was branded 'MEGALIGHT', have had good and bad reports of their performance, I have had one tucked away for several years now, if when I dig it out it still has charge I will be impressed! The megalights are probably the most numerous as they are the ex-forces ones available now. Think thats a wrap!
