I have a chance to buy a silly amount of cells. All pulls from unused laptop packs. Is anyone after any, as I have to buy the lot to get them, and I don't fancy having 300+ cells kicking about.

All cells will be tested, balanced to storage voltage, and tested again before being sent out. Not sure on price, as I need to see what kind of interest there is first.

EDIT:-

Pictures on Page 2.
Cells are Samsung 18650-28A. 2800mAH, 3.75v nominal, 4.3v charge/termination, though usable in 4.2v chargers with a loss in capacity.

Are these the AA sized LiIon's? if so I could be in the market for a few at the right price.

gNick - Still working on price, but way cheaper than "genuine" branded ones. Should I get enough orders, I hope to bring it down to £3ish per cell.

exspelio - they are the bigger cells. 18650 refers to the physical size of the cell. 18mm diameter, 65mm long. AA's are, if I remember correctly, 14500's.

All added to the list.

I hope to have more information from my source after the weekend, and can firm up prices and capacities. Laptop pulls are usually 2200-2600mAH (actual, no "chinese" capacity claims here) and made by Sanyo or Panasonic.

Sinker - Yup, that's a looong cell, lol. Missed the decimal point.

Are the cell 'protected'?

My admittedly limited knowledge of these things suggests it's a 'good thing'.

No. They are plain 18650's. Protection boards are readily available though if you want to add them. Any decent lamp-builder will have a protection circuit in the driver, or will construct the lamp so there is no way you can draw too much current from a cell.

I would, however, suggest that if you don't know much about Lithium-Ion cells, that you just buy decent pre-made ones (anything with "fire" in the name does not qualify, and is also slightly ironic) Panasonic IMR's are probably the best at the moment, they are not cheap though. These things react badly if you mistreat them.

The last thing I want is someone "having a moment" building packs up.

If you learn about the cells, and what you need to do/not do with them, they are perfectly fine. Almost all issues with 18650's are crap, untested cells pushed out by dodgy manufacturers, or people overcharging them. It's very rare to see issues otherwise.

Aye, gotta watch out for them 😉 Mine are unused.

Will add you to the list when I get home.

All added to the list/updated with quantities.

Just a heads up - RM do not like cells going through the post, even inside the UK, so I'll use a courier to post them (Parcel2go or Collect+), or you are welcome to arrange your own pickup via courier if you can get cheap rates. Pickup from Wrexham also welcome.

Is everyone happy with Paypal for payment?

I should have the cells by next week, so I can take pictures and list capacities, and get prices sorted, so everyone can decide if/what they want.

Just a tip mate.

There are regs as to how you label Li-ion cells. If you don't know them, ask you carrier.

Sorry if I'm teaching my granny to suck eggs. Any difficulties PM me and I'll find out from work....I work for a courier.

I know there are regs on shipping/labelling Li-Ion & LiPo, so I'm looking into it, but any tips/links are greatly appreciated. I know RM is out of the picture (Apparently, a criminal offense!), so I'm weighing my options up.

I have a small stock of 18650s with "Ultrafire" wrote upon the side of them: apparently they are 4,200mAh - which seems too good to be true.

Which indeed it is.

Voltage is fine, but if the capacity is anything over 100mAh, I'd be surprised! They're great for about 5 minutes in a decent torch, after which they cease entirely.

I suspect they're recycled laptop batteries which have been re-wrapped to make them look new.

Moral of the story is only to buy known new cells and not to believe what the vendor claims.

That said, speaking as a vendor of Fenix stuffs 😮 - I've had a good experience of their 18650s, which do appear to give the sort of output they claim. The one downside is that the absence of a bump on the positive terminal makes them a tad difficult to change in dark as there's no easy way of telling which way round they are.

(On the subject of 'fires', I've been through a few Trustfire 18650s, which have been okay; and the Cytak ones seem to be relatively reliable so far.)

I'll take half a dozen of them off you as my Ultrafires don't seem to hold much charge.
