Can anyone point me in the direction of some decent Ni-MH D-cell batteries?

There seem to be some on eBay which look cheap but promise 11,000mAh which I don't believe, mostly because the branded ones seem to struggle to get over 3,000 mAh!

What batteries do Fenix themselves recommend ? I've struggled to find any myself for a chap at work for his Maglite, that I am converting to led.

Ni-MH is all the instructions say - alkalines will work, but Turbo mode won't work, meaning the light is limited to a mere 930 lumens...

Ah, they seem to want 9,000 mAh minimum, which makes me think that the Duracell rechargeable D cells have a different chemistry to the 10,000 and 11,000 ones I've found so far!

3 Ah (3,000mAh if you insist  ) is very low for a D-cell. Ni-Cads of this size used to be 4Ah. What I would imagine is going on is that the 3Ah ones are a smaller cell in a big plastic box. This happened with Ni-Cads when the 1.2Ah D-cells were of this sneeky construction.

11Ah sounds about right for a proper Ni-MH D-cell.

All you have to do is to find ones from a reputable manufacturer 🙂

I think that's where the thread started?!

Due to the fact that I have been struggling to find suitable batteries, I was thinking along the lines of fitting 18650 batteries and making a plastic sleeve to make up the difference in diameter, as the 18650 is only 5mm longer than the D cell.

Have you tried RS components or Farnell? They aren't cheap and delivery charges will apply but they do sell good stuff. eg

Several of the 'D' cells I've come across (NiCad & NiMH) are acually 'C' cells in a larger package, easy to check for just check the weight. This also explains why some 'D's don't have the capacity you might expect.

I use "generic" 10AH cells in one my my backups (12hr+ runtime@700mA). Plain green wrap on them, and from the few tests I've run, I would say they are about on the mark for capacity. I'll post a comparison picture when I get home if you want a visual aid to help when you go looking for them.

I'm also convinced that Maplin do some higher capacity Ansmann cells, about 8AH from memory. I'll check when I'm in work again on Saturday.

I bought mine from the forums on candlepower.com. I would suggest having a look there, they always seem to know where the decent stuff, battery wise, is at on teh inturwebs. You should at least get some pointers in the right directions.

The theoretical max for a NiMH D cell is about 13AH. You should find 9-12AH fairly easily.

Many years ago one could sometimes pick up ex MOD, (surplus) battery packs. The cells came encapsulated in foam in a small ammo case type box, probably about 20 D cells per pack.
Anyway, back on track, is it possible that there are later generation battery packs available (cheap) somewhere?

Any good to you Van, might be worth a look at. I have a vague memory that they're based in Crekerne in the UK.
