Scorpion TGX

Well, I am please to be able to say that the design is now finalised. The front glass diameter is reduced and the bezel deepened to take the new 42mm X 5mm thick laminated glass. These are made in Great Wyrley, plastic interlayer is thermally bonded- no adhesives used, and not available generally.

The design of the battery box is also finalised. Obviously there are no perfect solutions but I felt that keeping is as flat as possible was the direction.

I have one mounted on an Ecrin Roc and will be testing it myself, its looking good. Li Ion management has been revised and now its into a slow death burning for over 20 hours, as tested, on the standard mode of about 200 lumens.

The reflectors are tight beam and semi wide angle. This gives best combination of throw and foot level lighting. Max output about 1800 lumens.

Lamp weight up slightly to 195 grams, still lighter than an Oldham headset which is my standard comparison.

One tough lamp. helmet will break before the lamp.

Very interesting comments.

I encourage you to send the Trigon in for a cheap fix, I don't support DIY if it needs internal parts or offer guidance! Its on the website.

The Lynx X_Basic uses the same broad beam reflectors as the Trigon, I tend to aim for even lighting.

Only other comment I can offer is that the latest lamps do not really offer much more output than the Trigon, LED tech had virtually reached its peak when they were being produced. All we have now is more sophisticated quad dies, but needing higher voltages and loosing crispness of the beam. XHP 50 is good but needs 12V per emitter.

Latest flatpack 8V battery gives new lease of life to ageing Trigons

Yes, I think that is what he means.
A lot of Scurion clones will not mix the flood and the beam together, so beware.
My Scorpion X_12 does this as a preset configuration at 2 to 1 beams to floods.
X_8 does beams with low level flood, or floods on their own. This latest offering combines spot with wide angle lens. So Stu and I appear to be thinking alike?

The Scurion is an extremely well made lamp that is programmable to users taste as a mix of beams to floods. In this its maybe unique?
There are flip sides though, max on beams or floods are only half total stated output which in itself is now beaten by several alternative models, there is also the price.
:o

This new model is in truth another extreme lamp. We have done output and now we are on to the indestructible. In truth, its does also have a sort of charm about it I cannot really put my finger on. A chap I showed it to described it as "very sweet", whatever that means.

Its took 9 months to develop!

By way Stu, what on earth is "Panic Mode"?

Thinking of my friends on here, an advance order has reduced Lynx X_12 to the last remaining headset. Happy to take advance order but could be after Christmas before lamp ready as awaiting Tesla cells for power bank anyway.

Could be that last commercially produced 7K lumen caplamp to ever be seen. I have one of my own that wont be for sale, no way.

Just a question Roy about a lynx X1000, if the blue battery level indicator lights stop working when you turn it upside down is it a sign of impending doom? The lamp is working as usual but not the level lights, unusually I stored my helmet upside down after last using it about 6 weeks ago as I usually hang it on a hook on the back of a door and wondered if this may have effected it.
I can live without it although I just wondered if it was perhaps an electronic precurser to total darkness 🙂

All the lamps which indicate battery level by turning upside down do so by means of a gravity switch.
I have known these fail by sticking in the past, although rare.
Its a 5 minute replacement.

If the battery is charging and performing as expected in use, its no cause for concern, although inconvenient.

A few lamp related things for the New Year

Turn it upside down and give it a tap with apiece of wood, quickest fix yet!

#2 NAMHO 2019. The "committee of one" is quite busy with this up until July, this and other matters means that service may fall back slightly. Stock levels, response to inquiries etc. Sorry cannot be helped.

#3 Good news for some at least. The big bat cooker may not be dead yet, there may be a Scorpion version, but very likely 2020 before any available. See above.

Some news

The Scorpion TGX is now available, but only 2 in stock.

I was awaiting feedback on the switches fitted as push button switches have given problems in the past with Derbyshire mud.

People have requested custom X_Basics fitted with toggle switches for this reason, I happily supplied them but counsel against these for hard use as I have seen them bent and broken. Hence my support for push buttons. I settled on one that is IP 68 5 metres submersion, stands proud, and is 8 Newtons pressure, as a rider against mud. It seems I am right.

The following is honest comment from "Mark" a Speedwell digger. I dont pay shills, I leave that to others. His X_Basic was paid for normally and the upgraded switch the only favour in return for a honest assessment.

Reads:

"I have now used my upgraded Lynx X_Basic on three further digging trips into speedwell cavern. I made no attempt to avoid mud covering the new switch, and changed the brightness of the lamp at least twenty times on each trip. After repeated muddy fingers pressing the button, the switch did require noticeably more pressure for it to work. With extra pressure the switch worked reliably.

Washing the switch in between trips has restored the switch pressure to new.

I would now recommend this lamp to anyone looking for a reliable personal caving lamp at minimal price. I have not found a better lamp for the price. The closest competition are Fenix’s HL55 and HP12. These are a similar price to the Lynx (when the battery and charger is taken into account) but with only a single 18650 battery."

The Dragon has recently been upgraded to its present form, he bought one for his wife, here goes:

Grace (Dragon EX lamp user):

"The lamp fitted onto my Petzl Elios helmet with just two holes drilled at the front. Mark attached the battery pack with three cable ties (no need to drill holes).

It was easy to change the light levels, the switch was easy to use, even wearing thick neoprene gloves. I am happy with the lighting: with the switch down it is good for ordinary caving - the right amount of light.
High beam was useful for seeing more distant objects. I used the middle and lower switch positions for digging, both were good.

We came upon a small phreatic tube which I (the small one) investigated.
The lamp did not hamper my progress at all, whilst giving me sufficient light to see everything using the down-switch position.

I've only used this lamp on one trip and so far and I cannot fault my Christmas present."

A final comment says most in just a few words
"My initial impression is that I don't see how this lamp could be improved."

AS a final note I cannot include this switch with X_Basics for the price, but an extra £10 would cover it.

I have had only one occasion when grit caused an issue with my new lamp, Roy. It was in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu and I pressed the button with a very muddy/gritty gloved finger. Some grit stopped the button returning, and the lamp started cycling through its settings. A quick poke and wipe restored it to normal, and the lesson is wipe your finger clean before operating the switch. I have had no problems since.

If it gets worse Peter, I will give you an upgrade for a tenner plus return. Those switches a lot dearer!

I am announcing the Lynx X_Basic 2 as an improvement on the previous model.

The rear push button has been upgraded to an IP 68 design which has 8 Newtons spring pressure and stand well proud. This follows feedback from Derbyshire cavers who experienced the old type button sticking.

I have dumped the old XML emitters in favour of the superior XPL which are slightly brighter for a given drive current and throw a slightly better beam.
I have also dumped the large broad beam reflectors in favour of a tight spot combined with a wide angle. This is same setup as the scorpion TGX and is an improved light output.

The price has only increased by a fiver to £100 plus £5 postage.

Unfortunately, the buttons are so good they have gone into short supply and are on back order. I have 3 only lamps in stock with buttons promised 15th October. This also effects the Scorpion TGX.
