Good on you Mike.

My advice still stands about seeing a lamp perform underground before making a purchase. A lot of peole will look at this, understand it, but fail to see how it indicates the actual performance of a lamp.

I just use the scale from 1 to 4 as previously explained. Tells you the things you actually notice.

ttxela's photos indicate that his new lamp from Roy scores about a 3.2 - ie noticeably stronger than an Oldham but a fair way short of the headlights on a HiLux.

Hilux headlights are a good measure for professional users because everyone has driven a HiLux underground at some time or other.

Ah, 😞 I should perhaps clarify that although some of my pictures were taken with my new lamp from Roy on it's maximum setting they do not perhaps indicate accurately the brightness of it.

The picture I think you are referring to was taken with the lamp on maximum on a very short exposure (maybe 1/8 second) with no other light source and the camera flash off. My camera does tend to take rather dark pictures generally.I was rather impressed with this picture as the effect is similar to what I'd expect if using my Raptor to light the scene with a 5 or 6 second exposure.

I think Roy's comparison with 2 car headlights would be about right.

Photography is probably a particularly poor way of comparing lights.

This is a conclusion that I have recently come to, and not on the basis of camera settings which obviously radically alter the picture.

I think that different colour temperatures also affect the picture.

Finally, again my advice stands. If possible see a lamp perform underground before making a purchase.

I dont know a Hilux, so "everyone" obviously does not include me.

But the MagnumStar is easily equal to the main beam of my Skody VRS. If I go back to the car in the dark with it on full, I drive away thinking my alternator has gone or something wrong somewhere.

By the way, I do 'sensible' lamps as well

somehow I'm not surprised that Skodas have lights less powerful than an Oldhams lamp :lol:

Volkswagen Audi Group, 2 litre petrol turbo, remapped to 242 BHP............................and I can still get up to 40 mpg taking it steady.

That would be an interesting comparison, I'm very pleased with it anyhow. With the Raptor I now have two excellent lamps.

BTW I also owned a Skoda, mine was a proper one though, an Estelle 120L bought for £70 a few years back.

yes, I remember that Skoda. I thought the Ford with the sheep skull on the front was good cavers' transport as well...

The Skoda Octavia is a common hire car these days, I had one in Germany earlier in the year. The Skoda Yeti is making a good reputation as a tough, knock-about car for the construction market, where serious overland 4x4 capability isn't really required, but you do want a car with a good load-carrying capacity and plenty of traction for driving on unsurfaced roads.

Actually the best lights I've had underground were on my old 24v Land Cruiser, rating a 5+ on the HiLux scale...
