Further to what I have posted earlier I have just uploaded a technical document on the lightweight lighting system built around Mr Mikes Retro 2 conversion unit.
Its worth looking at as light output buries a Cree, its cheap to build, 2 seconds to change over to another battery pack, and each pack gives 4.5 hours on maximum. The maximum here being a lot more that when wired to an Oldham belt battery!

took my big tesco lamp down rampgill i found it had a loverly white light that went for miles and with duracells in it was still going after 3 hours ,the only problem was my camera settings were not right for it so i got a bit of bleaching going on...need to work on that, but on the plus side i got no blue/purple colouring on any of the photos which was a problem with all my other leds down there...the weight could be an issue as i found out when my bag expired.heres a few samples using it...

best as i could do as the camera fell foul of damp after id been to the engine shaft and most pics went blured.
if its a hole explore it...

Certainly very bright! My mate has the Tesco lamp and I have to say it is very good. I have used it on my photographs and is nearly as good as the Fenix.

By the way, it was good to meet you on Saturday at Nenthead

I think these torches are great for the money, but one thing to watch is that they are not totally waterproof despite the o ring seals. Mine has been under water several times and survived, but I have found It needs taking apart every so often to remove condensation or small amounts of water that has got in.

i procured one at the weekend and had a little play with it in the garden last night.

Seems like good light output and reasonable build quality for the money.

I am thinking of replaing my Fenix with one actually. May not be as bright but those AA batteries are much cheaper than CR123A ones.

they seem to be reasonably waterproof as long as you dont unscrew the bezel to focus the beam as its very sloppy when loose and will proberly fill up very quick.

Roll of electricians PVC tape same as we old buggers did with our T1 and T2 cells?

Re the Fenix.. I believe excellent stuff now have the rechargable batteries & charger in stock for these.
It works out a lot cheaper in the long run!

Reviving this old chestnut... had the mispleasure of taking my Tesco torch undergound last weekend, it had a dip a few times, to about 1' of water, dead as a dodo. The switch failed.

Use it for dry mines only if you must, otherwise spend more money and get something decent and right for the job. At the end of the day they where never intended for underground use.

bummer !

mines had a few dips and survived .........
I've taken a few apart and got the vernier on them
and the o ring grooves are a bit variable adequate-barely adequate - oring not clearing the groove at all....

inconsiderate bar stewards at tesco didn't have MEs in mind
when they got the chinese to knock them out.

i've used ptfe tape to pack out the o ring grooves on my naff ones seem to do the job

found i had to squirt up the switch with vasaline to keep the
water out......

that could take some explaining if stopped and searched by
the police ......
"well sir where are we going with this 8 inch
black think which appears to be lubricated with vasaline"

claiming your going into a dark hole with some mates will get you nowhere

I think I might take the condom off mine on the strength of that. đŸ˜‰

I am beginning to think that these torches are a load of rubbish, baring the cheap twin AA jobs for tenner.
I have to say that I am pleased with mine, and am still on the original batteries that seem to last for ever. I have heard this elsewhere.
They also seem to stand up to water reasonably well, only have to tape the joints. Interestingly, it’s the £10 jobs that seem to sell the most, according to Tesco staff I spoke to.

I guess as a few people have said it's horses for courses. They're cheap and not designed with underground exploration in mind. I keep mine in the car, and for a tenner (the AA version) it's a handy little torch.

Mine is also a bit the worse for wear, but at some point I'll get round to throwing a bit of abuse at it to see how much it can take... :sneaky:

This is a Roy 'tip'
I have tried the supposed 3000 mAh AA batteries from DX in Hong Kong. They are definately not 3000 mAh but just slightly better than the standard 2000 mAh, which Tesco sell at cheapest price, 4 for £5.95, beats Maplin.
The Hong Kong "Maxus" batteries do however put out 1.4 volts as opposed to the usual 1.2. so will power the Tesco cheapies with negligable light loss.
Its probably worth the trouble to send for a few.

My 3200 mAh behave like 2800 which suit me fine. It has to be born in mind, that like other electronic devices, for example electrolytic capacitors and resistors, they are manufactured to pretty loose tolerances, and a difference of +/- 20% is not unusual. So when buying Nimh cells from anywhere other than a military supplier offering tighter tolerances, don't be surprised at less than quoted performance.
I once bought some military spec Duracells with red and not copper coloured tops. They out-shone the civvy street version by about 30%. Keep your eyes skinned at Radio club rallies.

Where did you get them from?
And what is the output voltage?
I tried the lead you were so kind as to give me and unfortunately, the website didn't show any, presumably sold out.
