I seem to remember going to the cottages at High Holborn with my father I was about 7 or 8 at the time I think the shaft had a brick wall around it .Must have been quite productive the tips the wood is now on are extensive

The maps I have show no cottages, only the ones on the other side of the road. Apart from the shaft hollow there is no trace of the winder. There are a few bricks and bits of stone remaining from the screens etc as per my pics. The pit hills are indeed huge and the slack is well rich in coal especially at base.

The early Butterley incline from Knowts Hall is traceable and the later West East branch from the Butterley Railway is walkable past Forty Horse into the site. There is zero at Fortyhorse.
