I know this area very well having lived at Codnor Park from 1969 to 1979.I would be very interested to hear from any of you who has info on the Butterley Co. mines. My Father worked on the estate at this time and I spent a lot of my youth looking at the mine sites and shafts but at that time knew little of their history.

You and me both fella... I am currently trying to piece together the Butterley co railway Network which is quite complex as some of it was tramways later superseded by their railway.
The key Butterley pits appear to have been Hartshay upper and Lower, Brittain, western, High holborn, Forty Horse, Ripley and so on.... I am doing an Atlas and Gazeteer of route but its a way off yet. Mixed in with Butterley co pits are some private others etc so a tricky one.

Take High Holborn (Butterley No 5) on the ridge at Codnor Gate, there was a second colliery on that ridge on the codnor castle side (Celebration I think it was) which had an incline to it!

In fact I've finally just put it on the DB and will add/connect all the bits as I can. Pics on way too. 🙂

EDIT It was Exhibition Colliery no Celebration!

You are correct the mine was called Exhibition I think after the great exhibition of 1851, it is situated in the plantation of the same name adjacent to Long Lane The shaft was concrete capped with a foot square hole in the middle of it and very deep I once tried to plumb its depth and ran out of string, there was another shaft located at the bottom of the wood towards Golden Valley with a brick wall around it, but this was flooded to the collar. There were other shafts located in the Tanyard wood as well. Unfortunately I did not have a camera in those days so could not record my findings.

What a shame... I will go have a look for these. Walked over to Forty Horse today on Butterley railway (sleepers everywhere!!!!) and have permission for Exhibition quite soon so will let you know re shafts. I bet a few are still there!

Nice open shaft just off coach road at junction with police hq road.... see Butterley Company Railway Album... lovely stone wall around it and water stinks of sulphur but is clean so you can see quite far down.

Track bed to Butterley park farm was lovely today...I just stopped at one point and sat and listened to the birds and watched the rabbits playing in the sun.... million miles from reality...
