I am trying to find out something of my husband's mining ancestors. They were Thomas Buckley, 1852-1909, his sons Oliver Hargreaves Buckley,1874-1920, who was a pit horse driver before he went to America in 1894, Ernest, 1876-?, started off as a pit horse driver and went on to being an underground miner, Thomas, 1877-?,miner, Fred, 1876-?, miner, and Allen, 1894-1966, who was shown as a 'ropeman below ground' in 1911.
The family lived around Wolstanton, Tunstall, Biddulph, Hayes, and Norton areas.
I would really like to find out any details of the likely mines involved and any other information that may be available about the family and the mining around the 1890-s to 1910. :)

Around the turn of the century there was a lot of acivity in the N Staffs coal field. Among the pits near to where your ancestors lived were Wolstanton its self, Tunstall was handy for Wolstanton, Birchenwood & Sneyd, Biddulph had of course Victoria/Blackbull. While Norton had it's own Norton/Bellerton & nearby was both Sneyd & Chatterley Whitfield. This is just the big pits - as I say, it was a busy area!
There was also Buckleys in the area who were farmers & butchers.

thanks Mr C. That at least narrows it down a bit for me, and gives me a few more clues.

Ah wasn't aware you were abroad. You might also consider purchasing the book "Collieries in The North Staffordshire Coalfield" by Paul Deakin - I have copies available

Thanks Mike, I shall see if I can get it on interlibrary loan for a start, as I would like to see the relevance of the content before I purchase.

On the subject of Wolstanton, I've had an enquiry about an NCB training film of Wolstanton, made 1970-71.

Does anybody have any idea where this could be found?

Thanks.

Any idea of subject - I've a few ex-Wolstanton mates/relatives I could ask.

Thanks Mr C, no more detail on subject, just had it referred to as a 'training video', apparently it features of family member of the person who made the enquiry and they want to locate it as a birthday present.
