The yellow one was the last in use, and its been removed since closure - God knows how they got it out of there as the incline had stopped working by then.

Charged it and driven it up the incline? I bet it would have managed it.

I can believe it was hauled up the incline, but driven? Gads, imagine getting most of the way up and then losing traction and sliding back down again. Eeek!

Presumably the yellow one should be in near working order then? What we need is someone with a Ffestiniog Railway hat on to ask Greaves nicely if they want to give it away for preservation...

Too late! Already asked - they just denied its existence. I couldn't really argue as I shouldn't know its there!

Well, if they say it's not there and they go and look for it and find it really isn't there, then, er, I didn't suggest that, OK? 😞

Denied it's existance? maybe one night we should go bombing through the locked doors on the miners tramway in it, then when they catch up with us we can said it doesn't exist so they must be dreaming.

Another idea: If they deny it's existance, maybe we should just nick it and put it in cwm or something. Then they can complain that something that doesn't exist has been stolen, that'll give the coppers a few giggles.

Hang on! Sorry I was thinking of the ones in Maenofferen Mill. There are no engines in there. No waggons either. In fact the mill is just a figment of our imaginations!

I believe a deal was nearly done for the 4 locos and some wagons that may (or may not) exist at a certain location but one individual in the owning organisation suddenly called a halt to the deal. You will never guess in a million years what the reason given was!

I know the one from Aberllefenni is on semi-permanent loan to the railway at Corris for shunting.

The reason given by the "gentleman" concerned was "We might want to use them again". I kid you not - that was the reason given, much to the constination of the lower person there who had virtually done a deal, even agreeing a price!

Talking of Aberllefenni locos. One of Vulcan's Spooner designed steam locos, the 'Kelso' was purchased by Votty and Bowydd and converted to Battery Electric. This was later sold to Aberllefenni where it was used into the 1970's until one day whilst backfilling a chamber it fell 200 feet. It was never recovered but is still there to this day.

I would imagine that only the frames would be original to the 1877 locomotive but it would be an interesting find. Anybody got any ideas where it is? Maybe they continued tipping over it.

One of the side tanks from its days as a steam locomotive was found at Votty a few years ago and is now at the Welsh Highland Railway in Porthmadog.

One of the Llechwedd BVEs is now at Threlkeld Quarry. 😠

The BEV at Threlkeld is one of the ex Quarry Tours fleet (two were sold to Alan Keef when they bought the new AK loco) It never actually worked in the slate industry side of the Llechwedd operation.

It is good to see an owner with some common sense! Too much stuff is left to rot in other places (not thinking of anywhere in particular of course) :curse: Even stuff that is in a "preserved site" is just left to rot it seems what a thing for the public to look at. Even some unique and very historic items are treated with total disregard.

Rant over!

 I won't make the obvious comment involving vegetable cultivation sheds and hand-sized minerals!

Picking up the theme, this may explain a bit: http://www.aditnow.co.uk/community/viewtopic.aspx?t=40

And, um, thank you!

Rhosydd Waggons were single flanged because the Floor 9 adit had three rails with a short section of 4 rails in the middle to facilitate passing. If they had used flanged wheels they would have needed points and therefore a man to change them in order for trains to pass.

Single flanged on the inside of both sets of wheels, as is traditional?

I assume as it was a continuous ropeway that there were fixed places along the wire that trucks could be attched?

One of the Rhosydd "Gripper Wagons" (Megryn) is preserved and on loan to WHR (P) and is on display at Gelert's farm. It is owned by a gentleman (and author) in Blaenau pending (hopefully one day) a museum being set up in the Blaenau area for such items (contary to the signage which states it is part of the Stapleton Collection).

Seeing as I've not bothered with the Quarry Tours non-deep-mine tour, what do they currently use for hauling passengers around on the 'surface' trip?

They use 2 Wingrove Rogers locos that they have had for years plus the new (about 2004) Alan Keef loco.

There is also just beyond the end of the passenger line another Wingrove that is supposed to be "an emergency and maintenance" loco. I understand it is now more in need of maintenance itself! Due to the usual neglect. This loco previously worked at Maen Offeren in the mill.
