Reminds me of seeing a horse skull wedged near the top of the Catsall Rake opencuts - think pwhole's got a photo of that.

For another daft thing seen underground, there's the abseiling gnome in Silvereye Mine, which I have a photo of somewhere. There used to be a load of gnomes in Owlet Hole Mine where it opened out into one of the attractions at Gulliver's Kingdom. I think a friend has a photo of the late John Beck stood among them grinning....

Found a random wooden gnome at pump sump in Barneycraig. I’ve since met the guy who placed it there, so it makes a bit more sense.
Surreal at the time though.

Second strangest thing I've found (in 1996-1997 in Parc Mine, Gwydyr), was bits of paper with warnings / instructions on. Signed RF.

I leave the first strangest thing as an exercise for the reader.

Alex Fitzsimmons and I dropped a shaft onto one of the higher Snaisgill levels - landing on a small heap of general farm garbage and animal corpses. Inbye the water had a sort of slimy fuzzy growth thriving in it. Neither of us had bait that night. (kept it to dry heaves......;()

I managed to dig out the horse skull photo - terrible quality but I was in a rather precarious position at the time. But this is looking upwards at the base of a false floor, so the skull didn't 'fall' to that point but was probably included as part of the backfill - whatever's handy, I guess.

But these are very old stopes, possibly 16th Century, so an interesting relic. I wouldn't want to try and remove it for analysis though ;)

There’s a shaft down here in Cornwall with a chamber part way down where someone has erected a washing line complete with items of female underwear.

Good for a bit of a smile when taking a rest from the 50 metre prussik.

Abbing into a trial shaft at Drwys y Coed, exploded floating darwin sheep on the top of the flooded level!

One time in Box we came accross a whole load of freshly balanced and painted stones (blue and yellow), Rooot and I had passed a couple outbye by backdoor who had paintcans!

At the far end of a slate mine in Thuringia, Germany, I found a green furry mound, on prodding it gently with a piece of wood it turned out to be a dead Pine Marten. It had probably entered via the high stopes to surface nearby. The slate mine did contain a lot of Alum, this might have accounted for its change of colour. The body was well preserved and didn't smell.

This poor fella is still in Wrysgan. He has changed colour a few times from white to green to purple and back to a "dark gray with blue patches" type of pattern. He has bloated and lost weight a few times over the years too.

Anyone who knows Wrysgan will know how far and over what kind of terrain he had to walk in total darkness to get there. Its a miracle that he made it. When you see him in context its quite sad; he even found a nice quiet discreet place to have his final lie-down. :(

We had a 4 door years ago, the rear 2 looked like a pair of lace curtains, so I got a pair from the scrapyard, different colour, it was great, the kids stopped asking for lifts.

I had the skull of another darwin sheep cable tied to the front of my vitara, it came from the "parade ground" over at Grhonwy, silly thing had splatted itself over the edge!!!

I found this crystallised insect in Odin Mine in an old stope under the shale, well off the main route, on the day we found the floor-collapse years ago - not sure what type of insect it is, but it could be mayfly family, though it doesn't have the long tail. Whatever, it must have been there a long, long time. I've never seen this before or since. All insects I see underground are alive or dead, but not 'preserved'. The longer shot shows a stub of 'candle' (or maybe a home-made taper) stuck in clay, with the miner's fingerprints clearly visible.
