Staying near Elterwater this weekend. Any recommendations for an hour or two underground? Done Coniston reasonably thoroughly, what’s next? :)

Beg, borrow or steal a copy of EG Holland's Coniston Copper Mines Field Guide, it has really nice descriptions of the mines & the "pitfalls", inside & out.
If you get beyond the Tilberthwaite Mines, then head to the Greenburn Mines in the next valley, plenty more adits & surface remains.
Have fun 😮

Minerals:
are the building blocks of rocks. They are a naturally occuring, inorganic, solid, crystalline substance which has a fixed structure. (and some of them are really pretty)

Or go see the oldest workings of the lot The 5,000 year old workings on the greenstone band that runs through the Langdale Pikes across to Scafell Pike. This Stone was used to manufacture axe heads and there are dozens of places you can still see where and how this rock was worked.

Many thanks Mae and others! A great day in there checking out the level and having a wander around Hodge close. The dig is extraordinary - incredible effort! What do you get to if you ascend the ladder way at the end? Is there a route down from the surface?

The adit that connects to the top of the ladderway is pretty comprehensively run in at present. Some talk of digging it, but everytime we take a look at the task we are rather put off by the condition of it (rotten floors, crumbling roof, deep flooding, long walk in, tricky access etc etc).

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
