Reminds me of seeing a horse skull wedged near the top of the Catsall Rake opencuts - think pwhole's got a photo of that.

For another daft thing seen underground, there's the abseiling gnome in Silvereye Mine, which I have a photo of somewhere. There used to be a load of gnomes in Owlet Hole Mine where it opened out into one of the attractions at Gulliver's Kingdom. I think a friend has a photo of the late John Beck stood among them grinning....

A significant dump of pharmaceuticals down a shaft at Gwydir.

Though I suspect the winner has to be the big, BIG bag of cash found down a shaft around NE Wales... Then handed in to the Police who gave it back to him after the designate time :thumbup:

Choice of two depending on your sensibilities...

In 1972 I found a Jaeger-le-Couture watch underwater in Bateman's shaft, Lathkilldale. I wound it up and it went. Wore it for many years!

Whilst working at Bolsover Colliery in the 70's, I was looking around the disused pit bottom tub circuit. There was a section raised up with tube railings. Someone had been going to the same place for a cr*p every day for centuries. There was a conical pile over the railings the shape of a wizards hat. It was around five feet high....

Strangest; "Reliant " Bond Bug in Astbury Limestone Mine.
Daftest thing; Wall switch labeled "Sump Immersion Heater" in P8 nr Castleton. When it was switched on the red indicator lit up!
It was fitted with a PP3 & low current red LED - put in by my even dafter mate.
(And yes, he did remove it after a couple of months.)

We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

When walking along the Thames near Dartford; a big fridge, it was open and full of food, and all fresh so it must have been recently dumped.

Theres a selection of those living in the lakes on the Cambridge Science Park. Rumour has it they were dumped by kids from the nearby estate during the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle' craze once the novelty of them as pets wore off.

I'm told they are hardy enough to survice but unlikely to breed successfully so although steadily getting bigger will eventually die off.

We found a large eel swimming in Noxon Park iron mine once and a dead squirrel in Brinchcombe limestone mine.
Possibly the creepiest thing was the collection of animal skulls placed on rocks all around a chamber in Noxon including a pig's skull that had been carefully sawn through the left eye socket.

Not strange really, but on a Whiteheaps visit, bloated floating dead rabbit round the corner from the bottom of the access shaft. My friend in his wisdom booted it - can smell it now as I type.

I found that when the double deck cage came down to the 310 fathom shaft station carrying the bang wagons to restock the bang magazine that the cage door on the bottom deck wasn't there:o:o:o

A fox skeleton near the sole workings of a Moss Rake mine, near Bradwell. The odd thing is that it was nowhere near the engine shaft, but at the base of a climbing shaft in the roof of a small workshop - which means that it must have traversed the entire mine from surface in total darkness, falling down more and more climbing shafts until it finally expired. It would have had to fall down four separate shafts at least from the 50m landing to get to that spot. The engine shaft is 120m deep so it didn't fall down that and then crawl back up to 110m. The only other explanation is that a miner had a pet dog and it died! But it must have been either a good ladder-climber or it lived down there. Whatever, it was pretty weird.

I once stood in a dead badger in a half flooded adit (was with martymarty I think)
It burst and it was quite smelly.;(
