Perhaps a bit of relevance to mines, English Heritage have made Wayne Cocroft's book 'Dangerous Energy' available for free download. This covers everything from gunpowder through WWI and WWII to the Cold War with a gazetteer of locations at the back.

Nobody has thanked you for this link so I am. I have downloaded it and am keeping it as interesting reading for when I have time to enjoy it.
Its quite a lengthy tome.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

Thanks, I have had the book for some years. There is a lot of information in it, but nice to have a more portable copy.
