My son tells me he just bought a 1600 lumens torch for 13.99 a CREE XML-T6.
Seems too good to be true. He says the led area gets hot afer a couple of secons use.
I really tell him to keep it away from anything flammable,

I'll copy and paste a reply I put up on another site on the exact same topic.

Quote:

A Single Cree XM-L T6 is *NOT* capable of delivering that kind of light unless severely over driven. The usual case with this kind of lamp is that it is under driven. The driver supplying the LED should be giving about 3A to give the manufacturer rated 1K-ish Lumens, but the likelihood is that it's nearer to 2, rather than the 6.5A needed to give 1,600 Lumens (as current increases, efficiency decreases, and 6.5A is dodgy even in the short term of a few seconds unless extremely well heatsinked). The chances of a Driver in a cheap lamp supplying 3A, let alone 6A+ is pretty much sod all. The Manufacturers rating, depending on the "bin" of the LED, is about 1,000 Lumens.

In reality, most Chinese/HK vendors lie like crazy, knowing that 99% of buyers just know that it's bright as hell compared to a Maglite, and don't give a rats arse about anything I've just written about. A properly built light would use 2 slightly underdriven XM-L T6's to give a true, 1,600 Lumens Out The Front (OTF Lumens, or "real" lumen's).

I use 2 XM-L's, but in reality, I don't drive them hard enough to give a full output, and they probably give off something like 1300-1400 Lumens.

My eldest Son recently bought me a cheapo '1300' lumen version off Fleabay for about £12 with two batteries plus charger. Current is around 2.8 Amps on high but it had too many flashy modes (since rectified).

Cheap and nasty but impressive light output.

That sounds like the Ultrafire I got off Amazon for a tenner. For the price it's an easy introduction to 18650 batteries with the torch as a bonus.
How do you get rid of the flashy modes?

Much pfaffing about fitting one of these.

Beware, not simple as part of torch has to be machined. :curse:

Ah, in that case I'll put up with the flashy modes for now. But thanks for the link.

Recommend you peruse the 'Candlepower' type Fora as there may be a simpler mod to the factory fitted driver.

Imagine it gets expensive if one starts collecting the Fenix quality types.

The internet is full of postings obout getting rid of flashy modes, big question is why do they include these if so many people dont want them?

my favourite torch for underground photography is still my old fenix p3d, now sadly discontinued.
Not the brightest maybe but a lovely spread of light without a nasty hotspot and really small, very easily carried in my overalls top pocket.
