if its above CWD then the combo of fell running shoes and wetsuit socks is ace.
Fast draining shoes so you dont cart a few kilos of water, great grip and warm feet

Ar but the carrying of extra mass at the feet is good for my waist, or so I like to think. 🙂

Agree with Roy, I guess MacSalvors is the place to go for PPE / Wellies down here...although the new screwfix store up the road also sells safety gear.

Screwfix carry lots of stuff, not much of it heavy duty..Macsalvors all the way!
used the sitemasters as well as the others, good boot cheaper as well

Yes Somersetminer, I still buy mine at Mac's. One good point about sitemasters is the repairability.
I have repaired minor leaks by trimming off a sliver of 'rubber' from the top of the welly to use as a filler rod, and then melting it into the split with a soldering iron (welly welding) - it works a treat. Just do it in the shed and not in the kitchen to keep SWMBO sweet. 🙂

cant be that new as most of our kit has to come from ARCO now and they dont carry them. Quite a few pairs there still so they must be long lasting!
talking of which, I quite fancy these now, if only I could convince work to get me a pair...Century seem to be the dogs bo**ocks, firefighter standard so serious money

Now you come to mention buying wellies, I realise that I have never actually bought a pair in my life.............

me neither... oh actually, I do have a pair of Dunlops which I bought from Macsalvors in about 1974 and are still doing occasional duty for riding in vintage motorcycle trials.

The ARCO ones have been pretty much unchanged since around that time, which is amazing considering that I've never met anyone who reckoned that they fit.

I went over to using cheap lace-up boots and wetsuit socks in my caving days, I also have a pretty much unlimited supply of workboots so welly welding remains unknown to me and long may it remain so!

I do have to buy wellies but would never consider paying much more than a tenner 😮

I haven't bought any other footwear for about 8 years though, work keep me in safety boots which suit most occasions, polished if necessary.

In my opinion wellies with the steel soles are dangerous- Ihave a pair of heavy duty trucker brand wellies -site safety standard with steel midsole and toecap- I have had 2 incidents in which I have lost grip and on one occasion slid 4 ft along a track rail suspended over a shaft due to the wellies being wet and the sole being too rigid to flex/grip to the terrain- My wellies of choice are the green goodyears I found in Rampgill car park last year 🙂

Got those French caving ones which are great.
Big grippy treads and no lining.

Haven't seen them in the caving shops for a bit so don't know if they're still around.

Slightly :offtopic: but anyone tried attaching proper wellys to a dry suit?

Every decent suit is now marketed as a "pro" regardles of whether on not professional divers use them but have rubbish boots on, fine for swimming but not sharp slate, all the proper pros (i.e. those who can weld under water) have decent steelie boots fitted.

I attached a pair to an immersion suit, (one of the kind they use flying you out to a North Sea rig) when I had to stand up to my nipples in a flooded adit for hours on end. It was super effective and toastie warm.

Unfortunately it wasn't up to me crawling about in it

Anyway I used a combination of neoprene glue and tape. It definitely worked well or maybe I got so high off the glue i didn't care?

Dunlop Purofort Thermo Plus.... expensive but popular with farmers on account of their comfort and long life, but toasty warm and so comfortable that when they die I will convert them to slippers. Super grippy treads, steel toecaps and shock absorbing soles. Made of foamed rubber, they really are warm! Whatever they're made of shows better grip (even on hard smooth surfaces where tread pattern is unlikely to make a great deal of difference) than any other boot Ive worn.

Downside, the soles are rather wide, meaning those well-trodden foot-width gullies found in some caves may well catch you unawares....
