While compiling the Smallcleugh Exploration history posting, our COMRu friend posted an account of an outwood bound participant having to be rescued from Smallcleugh. This caused me to reflect that some 25 years ago, nearly every weekend we would meet a group of these people going into this mine.
I am happy to note that we seldom meet large groups like this today.
Has there been a waking up of the inherent dangers in underground exploration by these leaders?
Or have we been more fortunate in just not meeting these types of groups?

John, There is a whole industry of groups being taken underground on Alston Moor and it continues to this day..... Often these trips are part of so-called rehabilitation/character building etc programmes. A very interesting subject!

I can't say that 37 years+ of trips have had much effect on me.

Boy Engineer, I am glad to hear that! So you do not wake up shouting that roof's unsafe!
Nor do I!
Seriously though, I have met miners who just refused to go underground after some either minor accident/event, which so shook them that they simply did not have the bottle to do it again
It is a bit like shell shock, I guess, it simply is a mental thing, and given all of this makes me very unsure of its character building.
Although I am certain that their leaders think it does.

Sadly B Eng. your character is beyond rehabilitation......

I did not realise just how big the Outdoor Activity industry was until I started doing the mine inspections last year. It is very large in North wales and the Peak District with dozens of different centres and independent operators.
As most of these visitors go during the working week, many honest hardworking mine explorers are unlikely to have really seen any.

Hello again darkness, my old friend...

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
