Deep mined coal contains clay, dirt etc, from the floor or any bands in the seam. Opencast coal is recovered without any dirt, so its actually better quality.[/quote wrote:

That was a favourite phrase of the opencast management under NCB/BC.

Yes deep mined coal was usually washed as opposed to dry screening of opencast but as Wheldale points out opencast may need washing too! Seam quality isn't just dependent upon included mined dirt, as he also points out the coal may contain impurities from the time of deposition.

I know of one mine where dry screened large coal was picked out and sold for domestic use and the remaining run of mine (i.e. with mined dirt bands) went to a power station to improve the feed as it was still a cleaner, hotter coal than "cleanly recovered" opencasted seams in the same area.

The planning application for this is due for determination by February 14th. Lots of interesting docs in the application. 😉

I'd say this has a better chance of getting off the ground than the new potash mine, but then the investment required is tiny compared to that.

Just to update this thread, planning permission was granted over the summer.

Now they have to raise the money to start, and find buyers for the coal.

Is there a market for coal ? Are there enough tourist steam railways to buy this coal, as there sure as hell won't be any power stations after the EU large boiler directive finally closes all UK coal-fired power stations at the end of this year.

Do the other two prefer Lesley Judd ?

These EU Directives are getting to be a joke,

Is`nt Germany in the EU anymore, they seem to fair OK with their Lignite Power Stations, and they seem to have the biggest clout in the EU.

The guy starting this was on BBC Look North last week chatting about the proposal. He's a big lad - Amy Garcia was pretty much sat on his knee. But he seeemed very confident both about the viability of this project in particular, and also in the general principle that local coal should be at least be contributing to the feedstock for existing coal-fired stations. Bringing it all in from abroad, especially if it's poorer quality, does seem a bit mental, even if it is a good deal for train drivers.

Having had some recent work experience within the biomass changeover, I would think it appropriate to maintain at least a duel-fuel strategy for some time to come yet, as there will be undoubtedly be plenty of teething problems in the short term.

This say 12 new coal power stations by 2020
and another 37 gas , but with Germany reliant on Russian gas and the EU sanctions on Russia
They might all end up as coal
