Does anyone on this topic know about any mines in Lumb Bottom?
We are attempting to extend our house and appear to have un earthed either an old water well or some kind of shaft, it's cylindrical and made out of stone, sounds to me like a well but unsure, the geological engineers are looking into it and said it also could be a Malt kiln.

Basil Woodhead used to own my house and is shown on the original deeds.

There are many old shafts and mines in the area. I think a lot of it was pre 1850s and so there may well be no record of it all.

There is a malt kiln marked on old OS maps, but I don't know if they would have any sort of shaft.

Can you see the bottom of it, or is it full of rubble?

Hi there

I am in touch with a relative of Basil's. Shall I ask him about Lumb Bottom - I have never heard of it personally.

Hi Yorkshireman
I showed my brother this site yesterday and we were trying to find our ggrandfather's pits but could not. I think one of our relatives has papers but then I saw the PDF you had put on this site and there were Grove/Raffles/Dixon and Beulah - absolutely brilliant!

Thank you so much for this.

I now need to print it off clearly!

Your reference to the glue works in Troydale (is in fact in Farnley on that side of the Beck) and was known as Farnley Mill ref "Leeds Tithe Maps" My Great Grandfather ran the mill in the late 19th century and resided at Throstle House situated behind the mill.My late Grandfather was shown working as a "Glue Boiler" in the 1901 census.Hope this info has some significance to your project. Best regards
