I had always thought that the very last ore workings of this mine, around 1920,( when the government took away their lead and zinc mining subsidy), were in the flat workings of the Barneycraig Vein in Northumberland.
All the ore from it being taken by the steam loco to the Nenthead mill.
On a recent visit I have changed my opinion of this view, and I am now of the opinion that the last workings of this mine took place in the Rampgil Vein Stopes/ flats in Northumberland.
I have come to this view, because, firstly the raill track has been taken up before the rise to Hardshin's flat is reached, and the horse-level contains a lot of rubbish that simply could not have come from the roof as it is concreted.
Also there is no sign of the sleepers or provision for them in the horse level.
It is of course possible that VM took the Barneycraig ore out via the horse level of that name, but I cannot remember seeing rails in there either, but perhaps someone will confirm this.

I thought that workings on the Barneycraig Horse Level and Rampgill horizon on the BC vein where trammed out via the BCHL up to Rampgill Shaft and then out via RG portal?

Barneycraig Craig HL is driven at the horizon of the Quarry Hazel and so would have only been used to move ore from stopes below the Great Limestone, and so does not effect the points I made.
We also know, from Dunham that they were extracting ore from Hardshins flat in 1917, yet at the present time the Rampgill rails do not even reach the hopperway to the Flat.
It is of course probable that these rails were removed and used elsewhere.
Haggs mine would be a likely choice.

I can't remember whether I should already know this or not but if they were bringing ore up from BHL to Rampgill then how?

The amount of room around the Rampgill landing & the chamber above certainly suggests it was a winding shaft of some nature (& as confirmed by signal sign previously discussed elsewhere) but I can't think that there is any physical evidence there now?

I take the point that ore from Barneycraig workings in the 4 fathom limestone and Quarry Hazel may probably been brought to Rampgil shaft and up to the Horse level, then taken out via the steam loco.
However, based on the present day rail evidence, the last workings of the mine must have been in Rampgill Vein Northumberland, simply because the rails for it are in situ.
Incidentally looking at the shaft either it has suffered a lot
damage to its structure, or alternatively after the failure of VM's deep angled shaft trials it was partially filled in.
If this occurred, then clearly BC ore could not have been lifted up it.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
