Just a coincidence
Archaeologists find 'world's oldest railway tunnel' in Derbyshire
Archaeologists in Derbyshire have found what they believe is the world's oldest railway tunnel.
The tunnel lies on the route of the Butterley Gangroad, a horse-operated railway built by 1793 to link the Cromford Canal with limestone quarries at Crich.

Hmmm... I (and my grandparents) used to live a few hundred yards from a short lane all the locals called "The Gang", Without checking the maps I would put this on a fairly direct line from the Canal just below Butterley to Crich.
No-one from up to three generations back could say why it was always called "The Gang" but it was notorious as the local "Lovers Lane".
Maybe you've just given me a hint to the origin of the name 🙂
