I've just been contacted by a group looking for a few cwts of iron ore to use in a bloomery, smelting process.
Anyone know a source?

Monty, dont know whats available/accessable up north Egremont etc, possibly Florence iron mine would still have a stockpile.
Down here the Forest of Dean mines would be worth a try, you could ask at Clearwell Caves. dont know what form the ore is in when it gets to Corus at Port Talbot, could be sintered, also worth an ask

If you're looking for high iron content imported stuff that would go into a modern furnace it may well be an idea to speak to Tata Steel in Scunthorpe / Port Talbot or SSI in Teesside.

If you're actually looking for a low iron content local rock then theres a few billion tonnes left in Cleveland if you know where to look.....

if its sintered it'll not be far off pure I think? or their own mix, would require higher temperatures, not sure a bloomery would manage smelting takes hours with just basic ore.
wonder if any of TATA/Corus plants take any basic ore anymore, perhaps to mix with the charge

Boat loads of the stuff, all the sintering is done on-site and then conveyed direct into the furnace.

Heres a nice picture from the top of the Redcar Blast Furnace showing the Sinter Plant.

great photos! I used to work for a company who has the contract to drill the tapholes on the south wales furnaces, couldnt even get on to the site due to needing various safety passports, pity would have liked to have seen it

Only a fortnight ago my colleague obtained some pellets of sintered ore from a source within Tata for exactly the same purpose by a group associated with Sheffield University.
They have used such ore previously and it works well. They have also used raw limestone based ore of about 20% iron too but the pellets were easier and cheaper on the charcoal required.

Whereabouts in the country is this ore required? I suspect one or two of us here could help if logistics worked out.

I know of a site where there's what appears to be good hematite thrown up by trialling for lead, though whether the National Trust would let you dig for it is another matter....

I doubt if you'll get anything from the Forest of Dean. Most of the stuff Clearwell Caves gets now is ochre and that'll be used for paints. As far as I know any significant iron ore deposits will be below the water level in all the mines.

The ore is needed in Hampshire.

Hampshire, Clearwell would be your best bet then. Ray or Jonathan Wright would be the guys to speak to, if theres nothing suitable underground there they'll know where to find some..

WIRG did some experimental iron extraction a while back.

The ore used is described here:

Try approaching the claypit mentioned - it's not as far as the FoD. The ore is not high grade, however.

The company is Ibstock.

I curse the stuff when ever I dig the garden with great lumps of it coming up so there must still be a lot in Northants.
