This is at least the second major 'rebuild' of the Newcome engine at the BCLM.

It was working fine a year or so ago, but I understand they wanted to 'rebuild' it for the Newcomen 300th Anniversary celebrations and make it operate automatically.

Haven't had chance to pop in to see if they have done that.

Actually, what pulls the piston up in this case, is two whacking great stacks of weights supended from a tee piece above the plunger of the plunger pole pump in the shaft bottom!

Here's a pic taken when me and a couple of mates repaired the pump in 2003
The weight stacks are hung on the two rods either side of the pump.

The mind Boggles, to run a Newcomen engine properly, a vacuum supply is needed surely? The cylinder sucks, it does'nt blow.

The engine featured, however, does give us all an insight into how they worked things out back then and might spark some innovitive thinking in today's generation.

(god, I wish they'd get a spell checker on here)
