We deff walked out facing a head wind/draught on New years day ....not breezy at all out side BUT traditionally wet .
Oddly not long after commenting to the Mrs that the air was decidedly "stale" close to where she made the rails wobble .....but then i do tend to notice as my asthma starts to play up a tad ??

And here is a new stable bridge - rails seem a bit wobbly now...

4x4 timber is surprisingly heavy - many thanks to Stu for helping

Don't let on to SWMBO - I rarely do DIY that quickly!

Well done guys!
Looks like an excellent piece of work!
I do not know how you manged to get over Killhope!
It was snowing buckets here and I could not our house until it stopped,
Look forward to trying out when we are next in Smallcleugh.
We established years ago that the main way to the back end of the mine was to use the main horse level and then down the Old Flat cross cut and onto 1st Sun Vein.
Going through Hethrington's the opposite way it was driven.
By the way my ambition is to be able to go through here when I am 80!

No reason why you shouldn't
Age is all in the mind

I was 68 this week, been doing karate for over 12 months now and starting Aikido as well on Wednesday!

We always figured that the blast straight down the horse level from gypsum corner is the quickest when you just want to be out, dry & in the pub. Personally though, the route down the hard cross cut & through the full length of the flats is always going to be the best.

80 sounds an achievement, the way I'm feeling at the moment 40 will be a bonus!

As you correctly surmised I have a few years to go yet namely 9 and half! So it is hopefully achievable.
Talking of Hethrington, there is a copy of part of Hethrington's original survey notes in the CRO.
Scribbled on one of them and difficult to read it says Hethrington drove through barren ground to discover the Flats.
He presumably thought he should have been rewarded, the scribble says he should have been given a pension, but the LLC. Agent presumably Thomas Dodds gave the work in the newly discovered flat to his favourite partnership.!
Nothing changes the bosses always look after themselves.
However all Smallcleugh mine explorers have heard of George Hethrington but how many know about Thomas Dodds?
So perhaps there is justice somewhere!

Only if our poor knees are the descendants of Thomas Dodds.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
