Hi all
Found a new site recently where a variety of maps including BGS bedrock & deposits are overlayed on google earth maps with a transparency slider function. Unfortunately there is no location search function so keeping usage down but it is still a very useful tool.

They are indeed very good sites. It so happens I've been talking to the author of the mapping as he is the leading light on the OS Openspace forum. In the first instance you've quoted the warpdemo, where Bill has managed to warp the OS tiles to fit to the satellite info. This makes the transparency feature worthwhile. There is I suspect more to come from Bill.

This not only has a search facility but if you allow it to load your current location it will then load the appropriate map. But it does not have the transparency slider. The combination of all of the above will obviously lead to an App I would have thought

I do have Bill's permission to use some of the code and I'm currently playing around with a database version. Naturally the database could contain any info you wish i.e. mines, suface remains etc. It could also call weather info for the area along the lines of my own local weather station or Met Office data.
http://www.biglow.co.uk/weather/php/osmap.php  ). You could have pop up windows with either photos or video.
As yet though the OS Openspace Team gave not released any guidelines for iOS or HTML5, their site says coming soon!

Meanwhile it's the Google V3 API that's driving everything.

Who knows we could have an AditNow App in the offing 😉
Sadly it won't be me as I'm still stuck on OS Leopard 😞
Might try the Hackintosh route 😎

I've not got a Google Earth layer, but I have been using mapping from OS Openspace on my Mines and Quarries of North Wales website (http://www.hendrecoed.org.uk/Wilkinson/search) to show the positions of mines on OS 1:50,000 mapping.

Each mine is indicated by a marker, putting the pointer on the marker will show the mine name and clicking on the marker will give the mine grid reference and product and a link to the gazetteer details.

Changing the query (e.g. changing the product from copper to lead) will cause the map to update automatically.

I plan to add a Google Earth layer, again with a slider to control transparency as mentioned above, but that's for the future.

That is a useful site, however a lot of the information on Cornish/Devon stuff has been lost in translation.

I use a program called MWSnap to take screen shots (freeware) and then an older version of Smart Notebook which is a program for running an interactive whiteboard. It allows you to move the images around, alter their transparency, select things and muck about with them, as well as adding text and arrows. Most awesomely, it allows you to convert script into text....

Interesting. I set it to bedrock but there is no key to tell you what the bedrock is (ditto for deposits)

Yes, great site, but do you know the key for deposits and bedrocks? Really needs it.

I can't obviously speak on behalf of Bill but perhaps this will give you a little insight into the pro's and cons of such map data development and the lack sometimes of data that would provide a complete data set.

The end user license that all developers have to agree to before being allowed to access the api's which ultimately provide the map sets you see, do have very strict rules. Slowly but surely the free data facilities provided by Google and others are being monitored and tile download totals are measured and if your site exceeds these limits then the tiles will not be served. If you constantly break these limits then you will very likely have your api license revoked or asked to pay for the service you are providing. This doesn't apply to basic single map data but more to the type of map sets that Bill and other developers provide, also known as mash ups.

The only truly free mapping sets are those of OpenLayers, OpenStreetMap etc. but the quality and detail of mapping information is practically worthless, although with time I'm sure this will change. It is however excellent for providing your own mapping info.

So with info supplied from this page here are your keys to the BGS maps used by Bill.

Deposits:

Bedrock:

As I finish this reply I've just checked Bill's Mobile site and I see the tile quota has been exceeded hence the "Sorry this map cannot be served at the moment." I doesn't take long for a posting to get around and the tile quota to be used.

Peter.
