Whilst visiting H.M.Treasury website recently (don't ask me what I was doing there!), I came across an interesting piece of news in the Press Notices, which I'd not encounted before and which I think should be widely circulated. The news is that for the first time ever, the Government is giving direct funding to rescue services in the United Kingdom, of which there are 75 teams performing mountain, cave or cliff rescue activities. Apparently there are 48 teams eligible in England and Wales, 24 teams in Scotland and 3 teams in Northern Ireland. At least £200,000 will be available annually for four years starting in the present financial year, with this year's allocation as follows: England and Wales £128,000; Scotland £68,000 and Northern Ireland £8,000.

If you want to read the press notice in full go to the following website:-

http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/press_notices_index.htm

Click onto the 2011 Press Notices, and then click onto the press notice dated 02/08/2011 entitled "Alexander announces extra funding for mountain rescue services".

I would suggest any CRO not aware of this funding email H.M.Treasury for further details and apply. Good Luck.

The funding will be passed to the relevant Mountain Rescue Associations i.e. Mountain Rescue England and Wales.

It is then upto the Associations to distribute them to the individual teams.

So there is no need for anyone to start sending requests to the Treasury 🙂
