Rumour has it that this 'ere chimney was demolished in 1995 however I've just been looking at a newish booklet from the council entitled 'Redcar & Cleveland Ironstone Heritage Trail' which tells me that if I'm prepared to put my life on the line crossing the A171 near Rock Hole Quarry then looking back, "the ventilation chminey of Spawood Mine can be seen".

It also includes a nice clear two page map of the trail which neglects to show the sites of any of the mines or remains whatsoever bar Kilton tip and the Huntcliffe fanhouse, neither of which, it goes without saying, are directly on the route of the trail...

Sounds like they need to consult with the local Mining History Society for input!

"Sounds like they need to consult with the local Mining History Society for input!"

Or lined up against a wall and shot, not suprised by the lack of research to be honest that sounds like their usual effort.

I don't know whether it's just this area or it's a national problem but this sort of nonsense is what we have come to expect from local authorities. And yet it would be so easy to consult with local experts and get it right.

At the moment another local group overseen by the council seems determined to get it wrong about the Upleatham Mines.

The splendid brick chimney at Spawood dating from about 1870 was for the boiler plant, not ventilation, and was demolished in 1995 in spite of some of us objecting. It was within the National Park and that authority was quite happy to let it go.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Having briefly worked in the Redcar and Cleveland planning department in the 1990s I am not in the least surprised. The impression I gained was that there was very little interest in and no understanding of the mining landscape.

I was look through it last night in the pub (where I accidentally left it) picking out other minor mistakes, that I knew would also make Simon unhappy.

Theres a nice photo of the Huntcliffe Fan House caption "Huntcliffe Shaft" (its a drift mine)

Also the description of the walk as you approach the mining museum at the bottom of the steps says you pass the ventilation shaft for the Loftus mine (its the staple shaft for Carlin How mine)

Its a shame really because its all things that could have been easily spotted by asking any of the locals and now you've got mis-information out there.

With it being from an official body it will be excepted as the gospel truth for all time even if we inform them of the inaccuracies.

I shouldn't worry about it too much, I can't imagine it will ever get read by anyone.
