I remember going caving in the early 70s with a mixed bag of this sort of old clutter, the club bought them at auction ( really an auction, not fleabay ) , including CEAG and Youle type lamps... NiFe and lead-acid cells, some with working periods down to 3 hrs 😮

how did we manage in those days..... well, carbide, the wonder ingredient, mostly 😉

All our old club lamps had what I called a " limit of daylight garrantee" - then they dimmed to a faint glimmer or went out totaly!

We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

I loved my old carbides as at least they were reliable and if operated right I knew how much light I would get.... Then I got one of the big ones with a gas generator that lasted yonks.
My experience of 2nd hand electric lamps back in the early 80s was they were unreliable and prone to letting me and my mates down (having been told 'you'll get hours out of these). We wasted a load of dosh on some only for 3 out the 4 to fail well into a longish trip. Fortunately I was not that trusting and had a couple of old Carbides sufficient for us to get out!
we stuck to Carbide again for a long time after! 😉

ha ha, remember this stuff... I had an Nife cell. but in an Ceag case ( complete with lamp cable up over the top ). I don't ever remember having a decent second-hand Oldhams.

I don't remember making a wetsuit but I remember some people doing it, and I remember the thing about putting unlined ones on with talc.
