I see a page opened for one of the historic Channel Tunnel attempts. http://www.aditnow.co.uk/album/Channel-Tunnel-Tunnel-User-Album/
Apart from being underground, is there any other mining link?

Apart from the technological aspects of driving passage underground, I don't think the tunnel itself was mine related in any way.

Interesting project though and the guy in charge of the tunneling was Captain (later Colonel) Frederick Edward Blackett Beaumont. He was related to the Beaumonts who had extensive mining interests in the North Pennines (Allenheads, Weardale etc) and also developed an early diamond coring machine which saw service in West Cumbria looking for iron ore deposits.

So, should it be on a mine exploration/mining history site?

:ohmygod:

There is a good write up and a bit of history on the subrit site

There are a couple of surface pics in the archive album as well.

But I'm sure there were some more underground pics on here once from one of the earlier trials - I think from a subbrit trip? I could be wrong, or maybe whoever uploaded them has since deleted them?

I wonder what this was bored with?! :)

This may well be the 1882 bore of John Dickinson Brunton, who may - or may not - have been involved in some way (or it may have been his brother) at Maenofferen.

The Hunter Tunneller thread (page 2) should cast some light!

As one of the admin for the South East I am perfectly happy for this entry to remain. It may have only tenuous mining links, but it is the sort of site that is of great interest to many mine explorers. I would draw the line at air-raid shelters, bunkers and railway tunnels though!

I would agree with Peter, the technological links are interesting enough in their own right to justify keeping it. Especially since it already has interesting pics uploaded.

Oooh!

That's got a method of getting spoil out of the back of it - now there's an idea that might just catch on!

The Dover Colliery and the tunnel attempts were physically separate entities, although not far away from each other.
