Do you mean working opencast extraction sites, or working sites for just building stone or slate, underground or otherwise?

Working opencast quarries for aggregates, minerals etc... Not slate or building stone.

BGS publish a directory of working UK mines and quarries every year, I dont have a recent copy though, they're too expensive. Maybe your library can get hold of one for you?

Get the ISBN number and request it from your local library as a British Library loan - much cheaper unless you forget to take it back on time!

Have you tried asking the British Aggregates Association? http://www.british-aggregates.co.uk/

Slightly off topic but if you are looking for a stone DB this isn't a bad place to start.

The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

Thanks, contacted them, spoke with a very knowledgeable guy. It is safe to say there are over 1500 working quarries in the UK. This does not include clay pits or open cast mines.

1500 is more than I would have thought. Thats quite a lot! Wonder how many there are in the Weardale area.
