How do I convert these files into any other format? Any help would be appreciated.

I think WPS is Microsoft Works isn't it? They should open in some versions of Word. Try this link for some more info http://forums.feis.herts.ac.uk/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1391

If you can get them into Word (or similar) then conversion to PDF should be easy as per the previous thread on PDF files.

Thanks Simon, yes it's a works doc. A friend gave it to me on a disc to print out as his printers on the blink. I've tried downloading the converter to convert to word but that didn't work and I got a serious error message. PDF won't accept it but it will print it out in the virtual printer. Great help if you can't open it. The easiest way is to give it back to him and save the original file in say, RTF.

Copy to a machine that has MS Works installed, and use the "Save As" to save as a Word Document. machine may have to have Word installed.
MS Works is old software now, I believe the last version was V4, the "MS Works" suit now bundled regularly with new machines is actually Word, or a trimmed down version of it.

That's exactly what I told my friend to do but it didn't appear to work for some reason. I'm beginning to wonder whether there is a flaw with the file or maybe our old friend, finger trouble 😉

It is quite logical and correct to say that most things in IT are backwards compatible but not forward compatible.
It’s possible that the file could relate to a later version of MS Works than the version it was attempted to open on.
Work around is to try to find someone who has a machine with the last version of the true works that Microsoft produced.
Alternatively, email it to me as an attachment?
If I cant do anything with it no one will.

The file size is no problem as I am on broadband, although there are still many out there who cant get it albeit without paying exorbitant cable fees.

It might be worth trying to open it in Word by, in the Open window, clicking on the Files of Type arrow to list the file type options. Somewhere in the list is Recover Text From Any File. The whole file will be listed, dross (OK formatting info) and text. It should be easy to edit out the dross and leave the text.

I have obtained about 17 pages of text using this method, I am extremely doubtful about it being MS Works, maybe the extension has been changed. The original had pictures inserted, and there is a likelihood that some text has been lost.
There is at the end of the text "Complied by Roy Blewett February 2007" so it is fairly recent. I suspect that it is some kind of desktop publisher file.
Now I have come across this before, I believe that there is another program that uses the “wps” file extension.
I will keep trying.

Thanks for making the effort Roy. As far as I know it was a works file originally but will confirm later. Yes the file is recent and does contain quite a few photos. This is the file he produced after I asked him to save the original in RTF or word format. As you can see it's still a WPS file. Why he doesn't use word or PDF is beyond me.

Right, thanks for the information.
Now, I am wondering if the file has become corrupted in some way.
Would it be possible to get another copy?
Was the file emailed to you?
In what format was the "original" that you refer to?

Just one more idea (after this I'm cleaned out so you'll get a rest from me). The comment Roy made about it possibly being a DSP file. It couldn't be an MS Publisher file could it ?

Microsoft Publisher 2000 can import and save WPS files (both the 2000 flavour and Works 4).

MS Pub's natural format is PUB.
