Unedited RAW files, especially if they're shot underground look terrible. Once edited they should look better than JPEG's as you have more leeway to brighten and darken areas of the photo. I'll second Lightroom for editing, when you get used to it you can bang through shots in no time.

Mine look out of focus compared with the jpeg. The colour balance and light looks exactly the same.

The Sony disc contains a ARW viewer but no manipulating software (if you'll pardon the expression).

Check the highlights and shadows. You'll often find that the jpegs have burnt out bright areas which can be resurrected from the RAW files.
As for looking out of focus, in ye olde days we used to have long debates about the "sharpness" of certain lenses against others with superior resolving power. Very generally speaking, Japanese lenses would have greater detail contrast which made the results look super sharp, but German lenses (Leica especially) often had a higher resolution but lower contrast giving a softer, more subtle effect.
So your RAW images will still be in focus, but they won't have had the edges of all the fine detail 'enhanced'.

God, the discussions I've seen online regarding "sharpness".
I have since ceased to give a f**k as long as the images aren't blurry.

They should look slightly softer than the JPEGs because the JPEGs will have had artificial sharpening applied, but they shouldn't really look out of focus.

Here's a thought, your software may not be reading the RAW file properly. This is especially true if you're using older software with a newer camera. I've got a feeling that buried within the RAW file is also a lower resolution preview version, (although I could be wrong about this). You can see it on things like Picasa where the image from the RAW file is initially soft then it swaps to a better version. Maybe your software is only reading the preview version or just not reading the file correctly. I'm not sure you've said what version of PSP you're using.

Xnview is a good free viewer and editor which supports 500+ formats, .arw included. Might be worth trying something like that to see if the problem still happens.

And/or upload a pic for people to have a look at.

Really, the best advice I can give, is unless you are doing editing don't bother shooting RAW, you wont see the benefits otherwise.

Here's a comparison of a cropped RAW file direct from the camera, and then again with sharpening in the Photoshop CS6 RAW Loader - both at 100% zoom. Whilst the sharpened image appears a little noisier, this isn't even visible at print sizes unless you're going above A3. And the noise reduction is extremely powerful, so this aspect can be tweaked a lot.

I tried Xnview in a futile attempt to improve my pics but it sends me even further back than from whence I originally came! :bored:

The same unedited .CRW file opened with UFRaw then Xnview.
