Would it be possible to add 'Firestone' to the mineral list in Add Mine?

Hi,
the mindat database lists the following minerals beginning with the word 'fire':
Fire Agate
Fireblende
Fireclay
Fire Marble
Fire Obsidian
Fire Opal
- do you know if any of these names are used for it? Failing that, at which mine/quarry is it found, and do you have any idea of it's "proper" mineral or rock name?
Cheers,
JohnnyM

I think that it is a type of sandstone, which solves the issue as that is listed, thanks for engaging the grey matter.

Thereis another possibility; it was used in a fictional novel by Anne Maccaffrey.

"Firestone
Firestone is a phosphine bearing rock found on Pern. When chewed by the Pernese dragons, they are able to produce phosphorus gases, which then ignite and are used, primarily, for burning Thread out of the air. It exists in two varieties. One variant is highly unstable in nature, often prone to releasing their deadly and potentially explosive gases on contact with even the slightest bit of moisture. This type of firestone is extremely dangerous to mine, store and use. The other variant is relatively stable, and require the rocks to be somewhat "digested" in the dragons second stomach's acid before the phosphine gases are released. This was the variety initially discovered on the beaches of the Southern Continent in Dragonsdawn and used in all Pern novels following Dragon's Fire in Pern's chronology.

Firestone is believed to render female dragons sterile, thus requiring queen dragons to use flamethrowers when fighting Thread. This side effect would be beneficial, however, with regard to green dragons (which are also female)β€”being rather promiscuous, green dragons would cause Pern to quickly become overpopulated with small dragons unsuitable for Thread-fighting duty were it not for the sterility believed to be caused by chewing firestone. This traditional theory is debunked for the reader's benefit in the novel Dragonsdawn, where it is noted that green dragons are sterile by design, as is the queens' inability to properly utilize firestone. Over time, this knowledge was lost, and the myth above became widely accepted."

I think I prefer this version. So all we gotta do is look for dragons...

Carnkie, it's good to see that you've found a new angle for your research work! πŸ˜‰

Yes it's amazing how one gets sidetracked. The point about tyres was quite good because I imagine they contain an element of phosgine. Unfortunately someone leaked the secret to Pirelli. Chaos reigned. πŸ™‚

Sandstones are made up of grains of quartz which can be cemented together by a number of different minerals, iron calcite and silica are common.
The 'firestone' bed in the North Pennines is a competent sandstone with a silica cement which makes it resistant to heat so it doesn't crumble if used for chimneys, hearths, etc hence the name.
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Is everybody happy to keep this as sandstone then and where required make the note of the more specialised classification in the mine description?

This issue comes up every now and again, but obviously recent members won't have seen the various debates and can hardly be expected to wade through the forum looking for posts months back on the subject.

Basically in trying to keep the site user friendly, and after some discussion and guidance from people who know a lot more on the subject than me, it was decided to stick to the basic mineral/product types otherwise people who didn't know the more specialised description might have trouble finding the mine, and might give up or even add it with a different mineral/product type.

That said, I'm more than happy to add new mineral/products to the list (I tend to save a few up and add them in a batch) where required.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
