Received the following email, and was wondering if anybody could provide any pointers. :flowers:

have just discovered that my paternal grandmother lived in Chopwell , Havelock Terrace. I know absolutely nothing about this area, unfortunately. My interest is researching my ancestors. I would like to know if there are records of the people who worked down the mines, and how I can find out exactly which mines they would have been in. I have the names of 2 of my uncles who would have worked the mines Albert and Alexander Jackson and they were there in the years before and after the 1WW. Can anyone point me in the right direction please, I would be very grateful for any help.

If this is the Chopwell Colliery that is in County Durham, there is a monument in the village that lists the folk who worked there from 1898 to 1966 apparently. I havent seen it myself but I could try and get pics next time I am down that way. There is a list of some fatalities on this site too:

Do you live in Chopwell mate? If so any chance you could check that monument for those two names the person asked about? Would be interesting to have a look at it sometime.

Also, I recommend a book called "Days That Used to Be" by Stuart Bell. It's a novel about a town close to Chopwell during the late 50's, based around the strikes and that. Proper good book.
