6/4/18 Reigate Cave Day, Guide Safety Training

A bit of a different one, safety training for cave day guides, how to cope with emergencies that may occur without distressing people etc. Quite interesting stuff really.

19/4/19 Dale Abbey

Nikki had an appointment at Derby Hospital on the Thursday before Easter so we made a weekend of it and stayed up there in the motorhome.

On Friday we had a ride out on the eBikes to Dale Abbey. Found the Hermitage Cave which is an interesting little site. then on the way back I spotted what looked like an opening in the woods by the side of the road. It turned out to be a little tunnel which opened out to a very overgrown cutting (with resident owl). I asked a few locals about this but no-one knew anything about it. A check of old maps revealed a sand pit in the woods and a colliery in the adjacent field with a tramway running between them, so this must be the remains of a tramway tunnel?

26/5/19 Mendip Ochre Mine

Nikki and I were on a motorhome weekend in Somerset, she wanted a day studying quietly in the van so I rode over the hills to re-visit a little ochre mine I had looked around a couple of years ago.

8/6/19 Reigate Cave Day

Another open day showing people around the Barons Cave. A slow start due to the wet weather but a bit busier in the afternoon. Some great groups with very interested youngsters which was nice.

28/6/19 Elliott Colliery Winding House

On my way to the WCMS BBQ weekend I stopped off at the Elliott Colliery winding house to have a look at the preserved engine there. Unfortunately I was a day early to see it running but it was well worth a visit nonetheless

5/7/19 NAMHO 2019 Henfwlch

Possibly my favourite trip of the weekend. The waterfall was marvellous and the mine and artifacts are so well preserved. Not a long trip but a lot to see to make it worth the drive!

6/7/19 NAMHO 2019, Lectures

It was great that this years conference was over 5 days as it meant I could spend a day in the lectures without feeling like I missed out too much on trips. It was well worth it and a highlight for me was perhaps the Polish chaps with their salt mine

7/7/19, NAMHO 2019, Ystrad Einon

I'd visited before during a previous conference but definitely enjoyed a second visit, another great little mine in fantastic surroundings. Of course the waterwheel is spectacular but there is plenty more to see too!

8/7/19 Rhiwrugos/Erwtomau NAMHO 2019

Another picturesque little mine but with quite a few decaying floors. A bit of care needed but well worth seeing. This brought my weekend to an end but I know the organisers still had packing away etc. to do. Many thanks to all involved in this years conference. It was another great one!

14/9/19 Brittania Copper Mine, British Columbia

A work trip to Canada (our head office is in Vancouver) we had a day free on Saturday and I persuaded the boss to drive me out to the Brittania Mine Museum.

The underground tour was relatively short but the guide was very good and she demonstrated a rock drill and a rocker shovel after instructing us to put our hands over our ears  Inside the mill was a sort of sound and light show which was also pretty well done.

16/11/19 PDMHS AGM

The annual pilgrimage to the mining museum in Matlock Bath for the PDMHS AGM. I took the motorhome and stayed in Crich and had a very pleasant cycle along the Cromford Canal to get to the venue.

The hot buffet after the meeting was excellent as always and followed by a couple of interesting talks on the underwater exploration at Ecton and the societies early involvement at Magpie Mine.

I had some plans for an underground trip on Sunday but these sadly came to nothing as I began to develop a bit of a cold despite feeling perfectly fine on the Saturday - ended up being laid low much of the week ;(

24/1/2020 OFDII

Last Friday I ventured warily into the murky world of caves 😞 do not however be alarmed, normal mine activity will resume shortly! I am very pleased with my new Fenix light purchased at last years NAMHO conference. The Magnumstar remains in use here as a seperate video light. A great lighting combination I thought!

12-15/3/2020 Conglog-Wrysgan-Minllyn

A combined PDMHS/Masson weekend visiting Welsh slate mines, strange how the world has moved on in the intervening days and it looks like I won't be making any more trips for a little while however not a bad jaunt to look back on over the coming few weeks.

10/10/2020 Wapping/Cumberland

A meet-up with some fellow motorhomers, they had started to poke about in trial levels and such they found during their hillwalking trips so I showed them around Wapping/Cumberland for a bit of a longer experience.

The first time I have been underground since the lockdown came in during March :ohmygod:

Mine Airbrushing

Well, I managed one trip between lockdowns :(

Since this year is a bit of a washout for going down mines I thought I'd paint one with the airbrush instead.
