Which direction does it go, and is it a drainage adit? If it's long and straight it sounds like it.

Fore Gill? Look to be a lot around there, so I'm sure someone better informed than me will be along shortly!

Its not fore gill its just of the road through a red metal gate it has a set of tracks most of the way in looks like some one might have the idea of digging the collapse I would put some photos on but cant work out how to put them in posts

Barras End High Level is at NY 987 012, the Low Level at NY 993 006.

According to Dunham the Low Level was driven NW for 739 yards as a crosscut before turning west which seems to match up with your description.

Hope that helps.

looking at the grid reference that was definitely where we where and a rough estimate of distance travelled to the final collapse and direction put us under the grid ref for barras high the interesting thing to me is the arched and railed section continues NW and there is a much more dilapidated section heading west and by the way its definitely a wetsuit needed

How far did the junction to the left go we never looked but it seemed to have had plenty of traffic

They went into Old Gang and Surrender territory but didn't achieve a great deal apparently.

Yeah, wish i could be out during the week too.

If i'm reading Mike Gills book correctly it was started around 1802, by 1811 it was 3100ft long and was part of a plan to develop the eastern end of the Fryerfold Vein.

Driving the Barras End level up to the Surrender Boundary was a piece of 'dead work' that was a stipulation of a lease granted in 1811.

It was driven from 1811 to 1814, then again from 1820 to 1823. Finally in 1828 it was driven the remaining 360ft to the Surrender Boundary. The Surrender company then drove it some distance into their ground along the Barras End Vein.

A few web searches mention 1km of caverns, but I have no idea if they are still accessable.

Also the following if anyone has a copy ?

Thorne, P. "Orpheus Caving Club Swaledale Meet, Easter 1985 (Moulds Old Level and Barras End Low Level)" Newsletter of the Orpheus Caving Club, 21:4 (1985), pp.13-17.

There are a dozen references to it in these archive records too http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=191-zlb_2&cid=-1&Gsm=2008-06-18#-1

there are caverns marked on the map where raws cross's the surrender new boundary I think there could be an awful lot waiting to be still opened up and explored in those hills

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
