Looking at a map last night, I noticed an area about a mile to the west of Ingleborough summit named Lead Mines Moss.

Not an area I'd readily connected with lead mines. Lots of mentions of caves to be found but nothing about lead mining. Does anybody know anything about the area?

Thanks!

On my OS of the area there is a "Lead Mine (dis)" marked about 250yds NNW of Lead Mines Moss. A couple of miles up the valley there is "Leadmine Hole" and a disused level marked.

If there is lead then it doesn't look to be outcropping anywhere. Is Ingleborough Millstone Grit on top of limestone?

I'd guess so. The crag on Pen-y-Ghent is grit anyway and i think that sits directly upon the main limestone.

from recollection of walking around there, all there is to be seen is a jumble of overgrown rocks and crags, with some minor potholes. The area has a history of minor lead mining in the 18th-19th C

There is a BCRA survey listed.

the local 'hopper' bus is called the Ingleborough Pony, reference the local moors ponies used for transport at one time.

Looking for lead mines on Inglebrough? What you need is a tackle sack full of 8mm srt rope and a copy of Northern Caves.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
