The winding wheel in the middle of the roundabout at Brotton is only indirectly related to Lumpsey mine. It is a well-used pulley from Boulby potash mine which was donated to the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum then acquired to be set up as a further visual distraction at a busy road junction. At night time it is lit up by blue floodlighting. If anyone wishes to view the plaque describing what it is then it is necessary to cross the busy road into the middle of the roundabout to read it. The access track to the Public Open Space at Lumpsey also leaves from this junction because of the by-pass; during the working life of the mine (1880-1964) road access was from the end of Railway Terrace.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
