I'm not normally given to adulation, but the efforts, ingenuity and sheer determination over a period of 18 years by the Norpex Team to preserve the inner reaches of Rampgill deserve a Queen's Award to Industry. I have to go and lie down now.

What was it made from? - it's got a suspiciously shiny look to it...

Mild steel sections, outer frame 4 x 2 RSC, then angle welded on, door frame 2 inch RHS, skinned with 1/8" BMS plate, funny how one of the tools that created it also destroyed it !!
Such is life, one door closes another slams in your face 🙂

Doesn't matter what kind of door you put on if somebody wants in bad enough it will go.

This raises a number of points. I certainly have no axe to grind with Norpex, however:

#1 The place has virtualy been stripped of artefacts already, a saying about "stable doors" springs to mind.

# 2 What if any arrangements will be made for explorers such as myself who only take photographs, albeit poor ones.

#3 Bearing in mind the fate of the previous gate, is the new one to be the subject of some kind of lottery.

# 4 The ownership of the mine is not with Norpex, unless I am misinformed. Has authorisation been sought with the owners, the County Council or NPHT?

Is this not an ex-door these days, being one that was installed some time back?

Looks like it's related to this one: http://www.mineexplorer.org.uk/rampgill/rampgill&hardshins_veins_170706/rampgill&hardshins_veins_170706_pic9.htm

Regarding the points raised by Roy Fellows, ref Norpex door

Dear me what a can of worms, Roy, this is an archive pic of a door that was in place in the eighties and you have been through many times, judging by your pics, As for artifact stripping it has been going on since ametuers have explored mines disused and working, I read your note re -clay pipes.

People still get in a twist over doors, didnt CAT put one on Hudgill or did I dream it, its all in the past where it belongs or is it ??

Kind regards
Ian

With respect Redwinch the CATMHS door at Hudgill is a totally different situation. The Norpex door was far underground, whereas at Hudgill the excavation involved opening a previously blocked portal. And as probably everyone on here knows, it is usually a requirement of the landowner in giving permissions for portal reopening, that once opened, it is gated. Hudgill is on privately owned land, so the usual 'Nenthead' type swing gate was not an option.

Anyway, me and my brother almost got locked in behind your door no.1 in the mid eighties after we found it open and of course had to go in and exlore ... 😮

A belated apology for point 2, however whether doors are at the entrance or underground, they are still doors, gates dont seem to arouse the same feelings
The door on Sir Francis didnt last long, thats why the level was "blocked" by a "fall" !! in the 70's.
