A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Altogether Archaeology Dukesfield Smelt Mill Survey and Excavation

Date & time: 20/10/2012 at 10:00

Details: 20/10/2012 to 28/10/2012

All that remains above ground at Dukesfield are the well-known arches, which carried the flue from the smelt mill to the nearby chimneys, but it is thought that substantial remains of other buildings may survive within the ground.

The fieldwork will use topographic and geophysical survey, together with several excavation trenches, to search for and investigate such buried remains. The work has been designed to inform the plans for a separate project currently in development, which it is hoped will conserve and interpret the arches.

Further information about the site and the proposed fieldwork is contained within the Project Design which can be downloaded from the North Pennines AONB website (www.northpennines.org.uk)

As with all Altogether Archaeology fieldwork, the participation is open to all registered volunteers. No previous experience is necessary as full training will be provided. If you would like to register for this module please email Paul Frodsham before noon on Wednesday 17th October.

Final details will be circulated to participants a couple of days prior to the start-up meeting on 20th October.
