A new event has been added to the Events page.

Event name: Period costume trip

Date & time: 14/01/2012 at 12:00

Details: Following on from the success of last year’s trip, we’re venturing back into Cwmorthin as the miners would have done, using lamp light. The idea if to take a fairly non-challenging amble around Cwmorthin while gaining an appreciation of the difference wearing our usual mine exploring kit and LED lighting makes! For this trip period costume is the rule- for inspiration see the photos of Simon and Briony from last year. Normal head torches are banned, please come along with a parafin lamp (and a backup torch just in case!)

Please make an effort this year- last year very few people actually dressed up. It’s not hard to find a costume in the charity shops!!

As last year, we’ll have a hot meal underground as well in the caraban (please bring a bowl and spoon with you!)

Very interesting. I have often wondered who Simon was, wether he was old or young. Now we can put a face to the name. I must admit I had expected somebody older. What a pleasant suprise.

So many people have told me they think that I'm older than I really am - I think I need to start worrying

Is it worrying that I've found virtually everything to wear for this trip amongst my usual attire? 😉
Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

Looks like quite a few people turning up on Saturday.

Hope everybody is making the effort and coming in period costume

Just a quick one. Rockchick provided all the food last year, but there were only 4 or 5 of us. With 12 this year it would be great if a few people could give her a bit of a hand. Nothing flash, perhaps a couple of loaves of bread and some cheese to go with the hot lunch that Rockchick is doing for us 😉

I would humbly suggest five loaves of bread and two fishes: that should go round.

OK, plan is:

Meet up at Cwmorthin car park at a leisurely 12pm.

Take a leisurely wander down to the chamber 34 incline and take lunch in the caban.*

(* a few of us will be going in earlier with the food and to (hopefully) set up some simple benches)

After lunch do some lesuirely exploration as befitting the mood of the day

Rockchick says... no lunch for anybody not in period costume 😮

Everybody to bring please...

Themselves
Some form of flame lantern
Plate
Mug
Spoon

Things we could do with between us...

One extra portable gas cooker
Between us - a few crusty loaves and some (local?) cheese, or any other food you want to bring, but the main course is very kindly on Rockchick again

We were chatting about the RFDCC Xmas retro trip yesterday whilst on the way to Old Ham. Electric lights are banned and we were speculating with the advent of LED lighting how long it would be before Oldhams are allowed on this trip.
Malc.
Rusted and ropey, Dog eared old copy
Vintage and classic or just plain Jurassic
All words to describe me.

You'd be better off with a candle; at least you'd be able to see where you're going then...

Not long! We did an incandescent trip about a year ago and it was hard going! Oldhams weren't bad, but the Petzl Gloom was shocking - it just cast a dull orange ring about 10 feet in front of whoever was wearing it.

That's right, i was using one- you lot kept asking why i kept getting lost in the cwmorthin chambers- it was coz i couldn't see the way out!
