#1 Some mines do not show in the complete mine list which is leading to duplication. Example Frongoch. I wanted to upload some pics but could not find it in the mine list although I was sure I had created it. Today, just by pure chance I find 2 instances of it. I have deleted the one with no real content as I created both. Now the complete mine list does not show it at all. Narrowing down to "Mines with content", guess what? Its back!
# 2 Maybe I missing something but I went to some trouble to digitalise "Mining for Metals in Wales" by F J North 1962. This is an excellent book and far better than some recent publications that contain errors. Is there some way we can have a "General Interest" section for document uploads.

I do not want to sound critical of a fantastic website that is possibly the best thing since sliced bread to all of us, and would like to say "Thank you" to all of the good people behind this who make it all possible.

I'm afraid I'm not being particularly quick looking at problems at the moment - have been rebuilding a server for the past 2 days.

Will probably by Monday now before I get to look at this and other issues (such as document upload problems reported and new document categories).

Roy, is this Frongoch issue between Frongoch and Fron-goch?

"Roy, is this Frongoch issue between Frongoch and Fron-goch?"

No Simon, I had spelled them both the same, it was both down to me. Its just that I was confused that it was missing from the list and I was sure that I had already added it. I put it down to getting old and added it again.

Sorry, found another one.
A mine that does not appear on the complete list does not update the "recently updated albums" list on the home page.
The complete list of mines appears noticably slow and cumbersome for a list that is only hitting the server for the return of data. Please note that this is not my field of expertise.
However, I am wondering if it is running some unnecessary script?

Sorry, no your wrong on the basis of simple logic
"This list" means the filtered list, that is, that the filtered list will take longerr to load. By virtue of the various scripts having to process the data.

If you do a full list of mines and quarries you will find this in a box just above the first item on the list
Quote:

Click here to narrow this list down to only mines with content, this list is slower to load since it includes a count of albums, photos, documents, notes and votes

I assume that a full list will do just that and will search through everything. The more mines, pics, docs, etc that is added the longer it will take.

Surely, that implies the full list should be faster though?

Isn't that what I am saying in my first post?

What I am saying is that the complete list should just be hitting the server for name of mine, mineral type etc, which is unfiltered data. In other words, there are no code scripts running, except the SQL expression that requests that data. The slowness suggests to me that something else is happening. This is not my field of expertise, its a guess. I am a PC and local network system engineer, which is not a professional skill in my book, Visual Basic for Applications programmer which is, MS Access developer which is, well whatever you would like to think is fine by me. I am just guessing as I have said, the Internet, Internet servers, Internet server data engines etc are not my field. If I am talking poo, I can take it on the chin.

OK, I've just about got my office server back up and running; which means I can just about open web projects again 😢

I'll take a look at all these issues and anything anybody else has mentioned over the past few days on Monday.

I have just visited the site from a different computer, a brand new dual core built for a customer and it is the same. I just wanted to confirm that the problem was not my own Internet computer.
EDIT
Sorry, to be more explicit, the full list downloaded faster, so it appears that this issue could be local, but still did not include Frongoch and I believe some others, also photo album update not on home page.
Hope this of some help.

I'll be looking at all outstanding issues on Monday.

The main problem with the full mine list isn't the server load, as you correctly point out, it's just a single hit of data, name, product and sheet. The problem is there's now so many mines that it is generating >3Mb of HTML.

I'll probably split it into an 'all mines a-z' which will vastly reduce the size of the pages.

"I'll probably split it into an 'all mines a-z' which will vastly reduce the size of the pages."

Thats what Miles has done on his site, good thinking.
Note my edit to last post, it appears the slowness is more a local issue.

The full listing does have both Frongoch and Fron-goch in it:

But... the alphabetic listing is now in two parts with what I think is the recent import ahead of those mines that were already in the database. This is from the middle of the listing:

I encountered the same thing this morning with the pull-down list in the Events module and initially thought that Cwmorthin has gone awol - but it is, indeed, still there.

If SimonRL is ever at a loose end for something to do (as if, given the server rebuilding!) it would be handy to have an A-Z index at the top of the full listing page that has links down to the relevant letter... 🙂

EDIT: you're ahead of me Mr.RL, that's service for you :)

EDIT2: although the server may be delivering a massive list-out of mine names, it's pretty damned quick here!

If this is of any help, I just timed the download of the full list fom the moment I hit the button, to the moment it said it was "done". I am only on a 512kb connection, and it timed at 32 seconds.

9 seconds here (over broadband) for a 3.6Mb page. That's really rather impressive :)

I've timed another site which took 8 seconds to deliver a 64kb page, so AditNow's delivery rate (which equates to 24 Mb a minute!) is pretty quick!

9 seconds here as well with my customers new dual core, which I have to add was not logged in. My own Internet computer which is an old 2.2, ok, it does the job, took about 14 seconds, and the vertical scroll 'hung'. Of course, Simon added a lot of mines of the Cornwall database which are attributed to me so I get the "Delete" and "Edit" permissions. I am personally uncomfortable about these being to my credit as Roy Morton originally developed the database, all I did was import it into Access tables, but this is a separate matter.
The new dual core still had missing mines, no Frongochs with or without hyphens. The bottom line on the opinion I am expressing now is that it is far from being a single issue as local conditions vary enormously, and in retrospect I aught not have brought the "all mines" download speed into the equation.

Don't worry about it, you've bought to my attention the fact that there are missing mines, and as you've noticed it's the edit/delete buttons that slow it down as (repeated several thousand times) they add a lot of HTML code.

I'll see what I can do to streamline it at the same time as fixing the missing mines on Monday.

This is fixed now, thank you royfellows for pointing it out and also to Vanoord for the realisation that the list was split into two which led to working out what the problem was.

Basically I'd forgotten to do a trim command on that last big batch of mines that were imported (from royfellows and Roy Morton) so some of the mine names had leading spaces.

Hence the mines with names that started with a space came first and then the mines with names without a leading space so it ended up with anomolies like:

_Zebeddee Mine
Alphabetti Shaghetti Mine

I've also done the A-Z on the Show all Mines page, it retains the facility to toggle between mines with content and mines without content. http://www.aditnow.co.uk/list-uk-mines-quarries/

Note, the mines with content, whilst a shorter list, may still be slower to load.

This is because the full list, whilst longer, is a basic return of the mine name, sheet and mineral/product type. Whereas for the mines with content, the system has to go off and count the albums, the photos in those albums, the documents, the notes and votes, and then present all this information for each and every mine.

However I think the A-Z list is an improvement and makes the full mine list much more responsive.
