UK Abandoned Mine Explores
In this one, we explore some of the vast slate mines at the Old Man of Coniston , Lake District, UK. In one mine is the largest cavity I've ever seen.

Begs the question where is the largest mine chamber/stope in the UK? Seen lots of discussion/tables/graphs related to caves but can't recall one for mines?

I imagine it's slate? I recall a pretty big chamber in Wrysgan?

Measured by volume or surface area?

I think the limestone areas in the Milwr would dwarf those Wrysgan chambers though. And down in Corris there are some epic deep and vertical chambers in Aberllefenni and Hen Gloddfa.

Your right though, would be fascinating to see some figures

my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

I thought the rear cavern at Foel Grochan was the largest open slate chamber in the UK? Can't remember where i saw it but i'm pretty sure it is documented somewhere

Some of the ones in Moel Fferna are very impressive length-wise.

If you get down to the bottom it's impressive in size. Not as big as the big chamber in Corris

I think i've looked into the Corris chamber from above the corris miners carpark, do you follow a path up just off the over flow carpark, up to a gated adit following the up stream? There are a number of open top caverns above this point, which i assume lead into the said cavern? I may have some photos somewhere, was our first wales trip many years ago.

I think Minllyn deserves a mention the main chamber in there is VERY impressive. !

I agree about Minllyn. Considering that most of the chambers are just one working floor high, they have a scale and grandeur. When taking groups in there, it's good to stop in the first chamber, turn out the lamps and look up to the daylight from the top entrance. The flooded chamber also impresses, especially the younger groups I go in there with.

It's interesting that folk have mainly, mentioned chambers on the steeply-dipping Narrow Vein. Some of the Cwmorthin chambers and the ones mentioned at Moel Ffrena, must be just as long. I suppose that they're less steep and visually less spectacular.

A couple of chambers in the Gaewern/Braich Goch complex go 4 floors down (5 to 8 Sgwd) and then another 3 (Vanes, 5 & 6). It was a spectacular place to be able to take people for their first underground experience.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
