Whitehouse Bros of Cannock were one of the biggest Mining tool suppliers in the UK,quality steel.

Whitehouse Bros of Cannock seem to have made a fair range of good tools over the years. 🙂
Did they cease trading or change their name in the late 1950s?

Edit: One should not lend a favorite modified pick to someone who may use it as a crowbar! 😞

I don`t know what happened to them,i was thinking about that the otherday when making a leg for another Mandrel

Thats where the Welsh Collier`s Hatchet got its name Ty Gwyn,you cannot get handles for these anywhere,unless you put in a minimun order of 500,so have to make ones myself.

Got one of those Distington Mine Car Plates in the link, came from Hem Heath when the salvage was in.
Just wish I could remember who I lent my pick to :curse:
Had to use a new one I was saving for posterior, when I buried the cat!

We inhabit an island made of coal, surrounded by a sea full of fish. How can we go wrong.......

Talking of picks, does anyone know where I can buy a miner's pick, the type with a hammer one side and pick on the other?

Callled a poll pick, I believe. Only ones I've ever seen have been jolly old. Maybe have a word with a good blacksmith?

That would be a Roadmans Pick in the Colliery,the pick for digging to sink a sleeper and the Hammer end for knocking in the cramps.

I`m sure i`ve seen Chinese ones for sale on e-bay,but suspect the quality are not up to much.

You could try Carter Tools,Derbyshire-Yorkshire if i remember correctly.

Any smith worth their salt should be able to make one out of an old hammer - if I wanted one I'd convert a 2 or 3lb ball pein hammer. Don't ask me to do it unless you're willing to wait two years for me to get round to making it though! :lol:

That could be a Slaters hammer or a Raking out hammer,used to clean out joints between stones in a wall before plastering

Poll-pick is the cornish term I believe.

They were on sale in this country in the 1990's as we used them all the time. I never got to ask where they bought them from. Derbyshire or Cornwall probably.

Still made somewhere in Yorkshire I think, Edd bought some miners tools recently from a place that supplies UK coal, will ask him who it was, he may pick this post up later when he's online too.

Fawns foot axe handles are still made by faithfull tools UK.

It would be nice if there was somewhere these could be purchased, I would like one and it could even act as a disincentive for people to remove artefact ones from mines which I have worked on to reopen.

Fit an Axe handle into a Ty-Gwyn head,which is 2-3 times as heavy as an Axe head,and you will have a Top heavy hatchet,
The reason for a Curved handle for a Collier`s hatchet,its down to balance.

Richard Carter Ltd of Huddersfield supply Miner`s picks and shovels,check out thier on-line catalogue,but no roadman pick like the one inquired about,but a good blacksmith could easily convert.

there were several in the stores at Combe Down. One of the miners used one for chipping pockets for setting the stemple for the core drill, knocking in wedges and general uses.

I've also seen them used for knocking pandrol clips in and out again on the pre-fabricated sleepers on tunnelling jobs - the tapered end is useful for knocking out, you need an accurate, sharp but not particularly heavy blow.

I have several miners picks of different types..(dont know the names) one type you can knock off the pick head by knocking a slotted pin out. the others are kist small picks. put fotos on in wanted.

be afraid.....very afraid !!!!
