Hello just a post to see if members can recommend or tell me what to look out for, when buying a camera to fix to my hard hat.
Their are plenty on ebay but I am unsure witch type /features the camera would need.
It would be fitted next to a Petzel duo 14,and any thing I look at would be filmed.
Thanks Gavin

Was given a GoPro by Mrs Hal_Chase for Xmas, not tried it out yet. Check YouTube for quality though....very impressive as long as you can provide enough light, waterproof and shockproof too.

Just replied over on ME, but if you can throw enough light at it, the Go Pro is an awesome piece of kit. Think 1,000 Lumens, minimum for properly exposed footage. This type of camera has a smaller sensor, and needs more light.

In additions, as noted in the other thread, B&W needs far less light to achieve the same exposure. Fairly easy and simple to hook one up to an AV Recorder that chucks the Data to SD card or similar.

A former colleague of mine who is a BBC cameraman in Devon and who is occasionally called upon to shoot in extreme conditions (Devon Great Consols and underwater for e.g.) swears by the GoPro HD & Hero2 models both of which come with a range of mounts - suction, hat mounted, strap etc. and an underwater housing. They give impressive Broadcast Quality HD video and good still pics, but I'm not too sure if the still features encompass the type of aperture and exposure settings that our unique underground situations require. Check out the website .....

Any suggestions for a genuine 2000 ish out the front lumen lamp/flashlight that doesn't cost £600+? (seems plenty of expensive bat roasters around on Dive sites) :ohmygod:

Further to my short post...

The only problem with the Go Pro 2 is that if you leave the damn thing switched on, even if not filming, it goes flat almost immediately - battery life is nothing short of bloody awful..

It does absolutely fine in the light from Mr Mikes Retro XP's - we've all got Mikes noew retro now - which I think is about 300 lumens. 1000 is WAY over the top..

I just sit the thing on a rock and let it film.. very wide angle...

Only problem is that you just point in teh general direction and shoot - theres no window on the back to see what you are filming, so its a bit hit and miss - major omission in design I reckon.

Appy New Year to all :-)

Not wanting to hijack the OP's thread... :surrender:

I'm planning to use my Hero helmet mounted, got it fixed on the side at the moment, up front is a Nova+, just assumed the GoPro would need some extra lighting, hence talking about a 1000 lumen flood of some sort.

(Also want to try the chest harness mount but it gets in the way too much)

As I said, I wasn't sure about the GoPro2, They were touting Improved Low Light performance as a selling point, but I take manufacturers claims with a pinch of salt.

The GoProHD needed 1K+ Lumens to light up any decent Slate chamber worth a damn, I borrowed one to try with a view to buying one. Wasn't impressed with it.

Have you tried the GoPro2 in a large (slate sized) chamber? Most of what I do is slate, and although I can pack an insane amount of Lumens, I'd be happier if I could hold them in reserve, rather than burn through them for capturing footage.

Concur with the comments on the Go Pro - I have the original HD Hero (the one that doesn't have the improved low light sensitivity)...

It's absolutely fantastic in daylight.

It's great in metal mines, confined spaces or passages in slate mines. Really very good.

But it struggles like the proverbial in big slate chambers unless you can throw thousands of lumens around.

The HD Hero 2 should be better; but even so its my understanding that these little CMOS sensors do not absorb as much light as the CCD sensors that are in most digital cameras.

It is however a fantastic little unit, good underground in small spaces, and should perform OK in large spaces if you can put enough light in.

But don't expect miracles in big open underground chambers - unless you flood it with light and/or set up multiple light sources you're going to get a video of where the torch beam is pointing in a sort of wierd trippy fear and loathing stylee 😉

Cheers for that Simon. I'll give it a miss I think, and just snag a DV based camera with a larger sensor off Fleabay, and forego the Lid mounting. I like Fluid Head tripods anyway!

How long does the battery last in the camera and is it built in?

A good two hours if you turn it off between use.

They are changeable and spares are about £15
