Does anybody have any experience of helmet mounted cameras?

Bobbing along through neck deep water in Nent a few weeks back made me think it would be excellent to be able to film it.

I came across this on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Oregon-ATC-2000-Wireless-Helmet-Ski-Cam-ATC2000-ATC2K_W0QQitemZ180189573226QQihZ008QQcategoryZ11724QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem  which apparently does 640x480 colour, with sound, is waterpoof to 3m, helmet mountable, and seems to take SD cards with up to 60 minutes footage at the highest resolution and framerate on a 2Gb card.

Anybody used one or got any comments?

Only thing I'm not sure of is how it works in low light levels.

It is cheaper on Amazon (only without the "free" SD card). I haven't checked elsewhere.

I see looking from feedback profile of fella on Ebay, he has sold a few. Why not ask what they think of it? Also, see if the fella selling it has a technical spec for it.

Hmm, just read a couple of reviews of it (and it's slightly dearer brother). The reviews seem mixed, on in particular mentions poor light results.

I've experimented with a small helmet mounted camera, but found quite a few drawbacks when used underground. The main problem I found is having to review what you've just filmed, to make sure - for example, that the lens hasn't fogged/got a drop of water or mud on it. Imagine filming all day, downloading the card and finding it's all out of focus!

In the end decided it is now easier to just carry a camcorder in a waterproof housing, much bulkier, but you can see what you're getting.

Might be good though for lowering down big/unstable shafts, strapped to a torch, to see whats down there?

Hmm interesting reading 😞 Low light doesn't seem to be it's strong point.

Amazon also has the Archos camera, but that needs an Archos player which I don't have (and not sure the "gadget for the hell of it" budget could justify) and this strange looking device http://www.amazon.co.uk/GoPro-Helmet-Quick-Release-Camera/dp/B001150XH8/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197567825&sr=8-11

Info and links to example vidoes usint the cam Simon mentions

On that page there is a great video of it fixed to a rocket. Really funny, especially when it hits the ground!

I know way off topic going up on a rocket isn't going down mine, still funny though (well I thought so anyway!).

hmm not sure where to dump it but i have a couple of vids of some underground water taken at the weekend. They were taken with a powershot 570is which is a ~ £100 or a lot more with a waterproof case. I was surprised at how well they came out. You might get acceptable results with other smaller cannons? though they do get expensive when you add a water proof case. They are easy to mount though.

That is what I used - lots of wires though. But had some good results.

The wireless systems look good, you also have a choice of what you use for a recorder. Expensive though.

That one needs to be connected to a video recorder which is a shame. The one Simon was looking at records it straight on to a chip.

If you like I can put them on the mining videos page http://www.aditnow.co.uk/videos/mining-videos.aspx , just email them across (preferably as Windows Media or AVI)

A have several videos, many of Elterwater - though I'm worried the size might be too big for e-mail transfair.
